The Making Of Romney's Storm Relief EventA scramble to depoliticize a political campaign, and $5,000 in supplies from Wal-Mart. Just grab something. (JUST GRAB SOMETHING??? - me)
McKay Coppins
BuzzFeed Staff
The last-minute decision by Romney high command Monday to suspend politics while Sandy raged sent aides in Ohio scrambling to convert a scheduled victory rally into an apolitical "storm relief event" a process that tested the campaign's agility, and left a few threads of partisanship inadvertently hanging.
(snip)
The plan was for supporters to bring hurricane relief supplies to the event, and then deliver the bags of canned goods, packages of diapers, and cases of water bottles to the candidate, who would be perched behind a table along with a slew of volunteers and his Ohio right-hand man, Senator Rob Portman. To complete the project and photo-op, Romney would lead his crew in carrying the goods out of the gymnasium and into the Penske rental truck parked outside.
But the last-minute nature of the call for donations left some in the campaign concerned that they would end up with an empty truck. So the night before the event, campaign aides went to a local Wal Mart and spent $5,000 on granola bars, canned food, and diapers to put on display while they waited for donations to come in, according to one staffer. (The campaign confirmed that it "did donate supplies to the relief effort," but would not specify how much it spent.)
(snip)
But even as Romney, clad in blue jeans and rolled-up sleeves, hustled around his area of the gym, shaking hands, thanking supporters, and stacking cases of bottled water on top of each other, signs of stagecraft remained. As supporters lined up to greet the candidate, a young volunteer in a Romney/Ryan t-shirt stood near the tables, his hands cupped around his mouth, shouting, "You need a donation to get in line!" Empty-handed supporters pled for entrance, with one woman asking, "What if we dropped off our donations up front?" The volunteer gestured toward a pile of groceries conveniently stacked near the candidate. "Just grab something," he said.

(18,373 posts)I hope you all brought your checkbooks. I think we have about xxx number of families here. Do you think you guys can match my gift of ($500K) to the Red Cross. That is about $100/family. If you can't do don't worry, do what you can. Whatever numbers are appropriate.
The whole thing is pathetic. I also have to wonder about the propriety of using campaign funds to buy relief supplies??

(81 posts)That's what anyone with a true understanding of human suffering would have done. He has so much money, he doesn't know what to do with it all. I suppose since this isn't a Morman church issue, he doesn't feel it would be charity to donate money. I think this proves not only does he not have a heart, not only does he have no interest in helping those less fortunate, he also just isn't very darn smart. How anyone can look at this and think Romney is a good man is wearing rose colored glasses. This man is selfish, dangerous, a liar and he disgusts me. And it's to the point that anyone who can still support this man, with all his lies, with all his gaffes, with his religion that basically spits in the face of Christian beliefs, well, they disgust me as well. Especially the Christian right who are spewing the ignorant facts of voting for the "Christian" because that's what God would want me to do.

(18,124 posts)jerk has hundreds of millions of dollars, when will he contribute $$$$$$$$$$$$to the relief effort? I hate this guy. He's such a POS. Fading into oblivion after his loss next Tuesday will not be good enough...
may he lose all his money and position in the mormon cult for starters. I don't pray that much, but I am for that to happen to him and his family. To hell with him!!!!!!

(18,373 posts)questions even during debates (can anyone say binders). Unfortunately many folks can't see the difference. On the other hand he could do that and also do what he can as a private citizen to help. It would make him look less like a plutocrat. He never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

(31,849 posts)The Breaking News preview stated: "The romney campaign is organizing a campaign to send vital supplies to storm ravaged OHIO."
My mind went immediately to other examples of gop candidates' self-lessly putting themselves in harms way ...
During the Vietnam war, a war-supporting romney, at great personal risk, went to France on a religious mission ... and gwb fearlessly protected Texas air-space from a campaign office in Alabama.
Why do liberals question the sincerity of patriotism of the gop?

(3,764 posts)It's late in the campaign and it'll look petty and desperate. We need the "liberal media" to spread this around while the Democrats remain silent on it.

Heck, we should even send it to Colbert, Letterman, Maher, and Stewart--and even Leno.
Edited to add Maher.

Funny how the man with more money than Midas doesn't offer a nickel of it - when the Red Cross has made it clear they need donations of MONEY. But leave it to myth wrongney to divert attention and do something far less than needed. Yep, this is what it'll look like. A sneak preview of all the wonderful hands-on care and concern and compassion
that he'll bring to the presidency if we're unlucky enough to see him win.

(3,918 posts)a truck with supplies. The righties were slobbering all over themselves about how this was what a real leader does...and how Rmoney really works hard to help people, blah, blah, blech! These idiots don't know a photo op when it slaps them in the face!
I know damn good and well that if it had been the exact same picture of Obama, the righties would be condemning him for being unpresidential or pretending to help or whatever other crap they make up! Their hypocrisy drives me crazy!

(10,749 posts)Romney - and Republicans in general - just don't get it.
Your description of the event is funny, and sad, enough.
What's remarkable, as others have posted, is that this is one such instance where being rich could have been used to everyone's advantage. He could have written a $5 million check and gotten his cronies to do the same, providing a substantial boost to the American Red Cross and other non-profit relief agencies. He probably didn't even consider this option.
