As a royal watcher/fan, I watched FOX coverage of Friday Jubilee celebrations. FOX was not allowed into St. Pauls nor were allowed to use the BBC feed. For about 4 hours, they continually trashed Harry and Meghan. They gossiped and speculated on what was going on in the Queens mind, her thoughts and feelings. The A list royals and the B list royals. Assumptions on the Royal interactions. Any type of tabloid gossip was their commentary. FOX as usual stirring the pot of speculation, assumptions, gossip, hearsay ..and slander. Despite all that, they kept saying that this was supposed to be about the Queen and Harry and Meghan were trying to take the focus away from the Queen. Thanks FOX for continuing your slander, lies, and rumors while you are across the pond. This is why Princess Diana had to leave the royal family when she divorced Charles.

(47,200 posts)I mean like 40 years ago. Back then, you would see a few RW Nut Jobs interviewed on real news shows, but they were joined or followed by someone to keep them honest (I made a joke/pun). But all the news shows were free of this kind of propaganda.
(dislcaimer:not counting war cheerleading, and Ronnie Raygun pushing/polishing, and other similar instances.)

(16,552 posts)People really should refrain from making pronouncements concerning things about which they know absolutely nothing.
I've noticed that there is a certain anti-royal sentiment among a few at DU that rears its head every now and then in threads like this one. Personally, being an American, I feel it would be rather presumptuous of me to pontificate on whether the UK should abolish its monarchy (not that I think it should, but I honestly feel it's none of my business). Some evidently do not see it that way!

(17,197 posts)I really loved the book Contact (Sagan). The movie wasn't bad either. When Ellie sees the beauty at the end of the wormhole, "I had NO idea....".
That's how I think many Americans would feel to wake up somewhere like the UK, NZ, Au, Can --- after being abused for decades all the while swallowing whole the meme that the US is the greatest country in the world. "I had no idea...."
I've lived in a constitutional monarchy my entire life. I've railed against the political party in power but never against the basic system, because I know we're lucky to have it Whether colonists recognise that or not!

(13,503 posts)come from Irish Backgrounds and are very aware of how the BRF (British Royal Family) subjugated our grandparents and great grandparents.
(The same can be said for India, parts of China, the Middle East and places in Africa.)
Also, America fought for Independence from the BRF. So criticism of them should be normalized here.
(Now, that doesn't excuse what Fox did, focusing all its ire on Harry and Meghan. Just like the GOP's support for Depp over Heard, it's all a repudiation of #metoo and perceived wokism.

(7,279 posts)Some recent polling:
Compared to a poll taken 10 years ago, it shows a drop in support for the monarchy
A YouGov poll has revealed that one in four (27%) of people in the UK now support abolishing the monarchy - a sharp increase from 10 years ago. Support for retaining the monarchy stands at just 60%, which is a significant drop in the 70-75% reported just a decade ago.
Despite the shift in sentiment, the majority of people in the UK still back the monarchy, as proved by a BBC study that found the UK could spend about £408m on the Platinum Jubilee, with £281.5m going on souvenirs, memorabilia and gifts.
The estimate was based on research from the Centre for Retail Research and, although a more anti-royal stance might be emerging in the UK, both sets of data show most people remain supportive.

Polling in Wales and Scotland shows less support.
As for the jubilee:
The survey also suggests the cost of living crisis has cast a shadow over the Jubilee weekend, with half of Britons saying they believe the Royal Family does not understand what life is like for ordinary people
While half the nation is toasting the Queens Platinum Jubilee, the other half has little enthusiasm for the celebrations, according to a new poll.
Some 49 per cent say they will be marking the monarchs 70th anniversary in some way, leaving 51 per cent who are not.
The survey also suggests the cost of living crisis has cast a shadow over the Jubilee weekend, with around half of Britons saying they believe the Royal Family does not understand what life is like for ordinary people in the country.
Two-thirds of voters do not think Prince Charles should succeed his mother as the next monarch, with more people supporting the crown passing straight to his heir, the Duke of Cambridge, the poll for Savanta ComRes has found.
A third of people would rather see an elected head of state when the Queen dies.

I agree with dchill, and what was posted isn't at all outlandish, so I don't understand the derision: there is certainly a degree of racism against Meghan which spurs some of the media antipathy, certainly among the trash tabloids and in what TV coverage of the jubilee I haven't been able to avoid seeing. It's not universal, though, and FWIW, it's notable that the most popular figure in a recent newspaper poll wasn't any of the usual suspects, but part of a couple who've opted out of the royal hoopla as far as they can:
Meghan Markle has been voted the most popular member of the royal family in a poll of Independent readers in the lead up to the platinum jubilee.
Prince Harry was a close second in the final ranking of adult and living royals, which means the Duke and Duchess of Sussex take the top two spots with 23 per cent and 17 per cent of the vote respectively.
The Queen, who is embarking on four days of jubilee celebrations today, came third, with 15 per cent of the vote.
Some readers said they were outraged that The Independent was running a poll on such a topic, some saying in the comments they would be voting for Prince Andrew as a protest against it. The Duke of York, who stepped down from royal duties in the wake of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, was voted the fifth most popular royal, after Kate Middleton, who came fourth, with nearly twice as many votes as her husband Prince William.
Two people wrote in the comments: Get rid of them all. Another said: I couldnt find the I dont give a t*** about any of them option.

Once Elizabeth dies, I think all bets are off about the future role of the royal family in our society. I suspect it will be downsized to more resemble those in some of the nordic countries. What will remain of its constitutional role is another matter. The current government aren't doing them any favours, and nor has Prince andrew, and they may well end up dragging the whole edifice down with them.

(25,908 posts)Harry and Meghan. It's truly sad. They always look very happy, especially when together. I don't understand why so many people are determined to say bad things about them. False things. They chose to leave the family business, and for this they are villains?
I have some understanding of their decision, as my husband chose not to become a doctor or lawyer, which was what his parents thought were the only choices for him. His two older brothers became doctors, and so he was an anomaly. But at least his family wasn't in the public eye the way the British Royal Family is, so his decision to go into a completely different field (journalism and then IT) didn't make him a public object of scorn.
A related topic is that when my marriage was coming to an end after some 25 years, I was grateful that we were not in the public eye, so that my grief and anger and our marriage break up was not being written about everywhere. I got a sense of how dreadful it must be to be some kind of celebrity and your private life isn't private at all.

(11,387 posts)the sheer vitriol that certain people carry around. Curious enough in the Brits - who after all have some small stake, or might imagine so ... For anybody this side of the pond to be so incredibly vested - and virulent ... It just makes no sense at all. But then .. we have the sad spectacle of the misogyny and invective piled on Amber Heard
Has Harry or Meghan actually done something having any impact on anyone in your circle? Anyone you actually care a fig about?

(1,159 posts)I dont watch Fox, but every once in a while I stroll over to DailyMail to see what theyre feeding the racist trolls who are their core market.
An article about a Royal pedophile might get 40 comments, but EVERY chum filled article about Harry and Meghan gets sometimes tens of thousands of the most vile, racist, hate-filled rants from people who get apoplectic when their racism is called out.
They swear to high water that their passionate hate has NOTHING to do with race, though. They simply dont like Harry and Meghan. See, a Royal pedo is bad, but that Harry and Meghan, theyre simply evil.

(1,159 posts)Hillary Clintons unpopularity among many is the direct result of decades of right-wing media lies and vilification. It pissed me off to no end to hear my fellow liberals say Hillary is just too unpopular as though Hillary opened a box of unpopularity and just sorta spread it like wildflower seeds.
The reality is that Fox and DailyMail and the rest of the Right-wing StormFront would have slammed Harry and Meghan just as hard had they NOT attended, and their merry band of dependable trolls would gleefully swallow every bite.

Of course, London is all filled with Jubilee events. We watched the pageantry on TV, and then took the train out to Henry VIIIs Hampton Court castle for an afternoon of jousting and wandering the grounds.
I feel fortunate to be here at this auspicious moment in history.

Btw, not sure what you mean about "had to leave the royal family" because if you're referring to her royal protection officers, SHE was the one who decided not to use them. She would have had them for life, but she chose not to keep their protection. A very bad decision, as it turns out.
