They ruled the materials needed for a free press were covered under the 1st Amendment. Ammunition would therefore be protected under the 2nd.

Gun Save Lives vs Ali, Illinois Assn of Firearm Retailers v. City of Chicago, and Jackson v. City & County of San Francisco all have touched upon and supported the idea that the second amendment covers ammunition.
