Rick Sheffield visits his brother and sister-in-law after a lengthy absence living in Africa. His nephew Jackie unpacks his suitcase and finds a revolver. Jackie and his friends are always playing with their toy guns and Jackie goes around town, pointing the gun and pulling the trigger, oblivious to the fact that there is a live round in the chamber. When his parents and uncle realize he has the gun, they set off on a frantic search but not before he fires at someone.

(73,537 posts)I remember the "civil defense" drills from my childhood experiencing in school. While the town was rural, there was a defense contractor there. The village the plant was in was called "the village we can't do without" in a big article in the Saturday Evening Post, in terms of winning WW2. So when I was in school, we learned the village was among the top eight targets if the Soviet Union attacked.
Part of the school did have a bomb shelter. But it couldn't have held all the students. As an adult, I've wondered if it was for children, or perhaps industry leaders and families that were more equal than the rest of us. Obviously, that wasn't a positive experience for anyone in the school, especially students.
I guess the difference was we knew our "enemy" was foreign. And dangerous -- they had a different flag than us, and wore funny hats I thought perfect targets in a snowball fight. Today's children and youth have to be worried about people from their own community, or who have traveled with a specific soft target in mind. Maybe someone in their school. And in my opinion, that is worse than what I experienced.
