Or at least to be able to use it against Republicans instead of vice-versa?
If so;
-pick ONE thing with overwhelming support. (UBC or red flag laws come to mind)
-write a simple bill addressing only that item, no add-ons, Amendments or also.
-the shorter and simpler the better.
-do not include any of the following words: ban, confiscate, surrender, forfeit or any synonyms.
-submit it to Congress and go on the media noting this issue has 8x%-9x% of the public support including xx% support of gun owners.
Should it not pass we would be able to campaign on the fact that Republicans will not vote for even the literally simplest gun control measure.
If not we can continue doing what we have done for years.?

(2,547 posts)Would be nice to see single issue bills brought forth. Muddy waters makes bad laws, imho.

(2,646 posts)The very least which should be pursued is cessation of manufacture, importation and retail sale of new product.
There is enough product which has already been loosed upon the nation to supply everybody many times over.
The abundance of supply is the main factor causing such a cavalier attitude about using guns frivolously.

(18,632 posts)And we know it has a 0.00% chance of passing. And the pursuit of it gives Republicans ammunition to use against "gun grabbing" Democratic candidates. And people will continue to get killed as more guns are sold.
So how does that course of action help?

And if Republicans vote to block them, they can be held to account.

(23,975 posts)item/issue. No amendments. No hidden poison pills. No single senator being able to block a bill.

(5,524 posts)You might get the 9x% thing passed.
Then the Republicans will claim they did something and none of the other things that are nearly as popular will pass.
There is a "strike-while-the-iron-is-hot" argument to be made to get a package of popular stuff done.
Otherwise, it is just nibbling at the edges. Worth doing but far short of the needed impact.

(18,632 posts)Or for that matter nibbling at the edges? No one has tried nibbling; basic proposals get expanded and added to until it is a major package of laws. Trying to get big packages which include everyone's favorite control, regardless of support, have repeatedly failed.
After how many shootings has the result been either nothing or less gun control. Wouldn't doing one thing be better than nothing?
