Around 1970, roughly the year that the GOP starting becoming pro-gun and pro-NRA, it was around that same time that the racist Democrats of the Southern states were leaving the Democratic Party for good. I believe the Repukes wanted to convince them that they had a new home in the GOP by going all-out on the gun ownership issue. Of course the NRA saw a big advantage in that, and they started pouring money into the Repukes too. It was an unholy alliance that has slowly, inexorably changed our entire country in the past 50 years.
