(19,060 posts)After the murder of Patrick Lyoya the community wants justice, but know it's probably not coming. Because these cases only make headlines for a short while, and then when the prosecutor announces that there will be no charges there will be a couple days of attention and then nothing.
I am here in Grand Rapids, I know the DA, Chris Becker. Chris Becker was hand picked to replace William Forsythe as the Kent County prosecutor. The minority community in Grand Rapids knows exactly what to expect from Becker, he's a Right Winger who sees his primary job to protect rich white people from poor black and Mexican people. They know what to expect from Becker, so do I. It's been over 2 months since a police officer shot him in the back of his head. We all know there will be no justice. Leaders have called for Becker to step aside and pass this case onto someone the community trusts more to pursue justice, he's refusing, because he knows it's is job to protect the status quo, not to pursue justice.
And that's what's lost in all of these cases, the communities know how unfair the justice system is that serves them, they see it every day. They don't need to wait for the next police killing to know the justice system is not in place to serve them, but rather to target them. They don't just see it when someone is killed, they see it in traffic stops in their neighborhoods, they see it in the disparity between the way the local justice system treats their kids when they get in trouble vs the way it treats suburban white kids.
You don't need to cut to the chase, we all know how this ends, with a Rightwing prosecutor excusing the execution of a black man on film for which he'll give a speech and then go home and put on his MAGA hat and watch Tucker Carlson to make him feel justified in his racism. These are the facts on the ground in too many of these cases.
