(10,252 posts)Wow!!! They're really going to town with the woke crap, aren't they?
Let me guess. Woke has now replaced the black welfare queens driving cadillacs?
I guess "woke" is just a shorthand slur for anything they don't like. I find it pretty strange, because woke is black slang for being aware of, informed about, knowledgeable about, awakened to, enlightened.
As a Buddhist, everyday I begin my meditation by taking refuge in the Buddha, dharma, and sangha, and aspiring to become a completely and perfectly enlightened Buddha for the benefit of all sentient beings. I aspire to be perfectly woke with a luminous and joyous mind of wisdom.
I think it's the "for the benefit of others" that they just can't manage to understand and embrace.

(16,858 posts)Or is Biden just the convenient scapegoat for all things evil in Florida. I loathe DeSantis and his ilk, and I don't even live in that state. I fear his brand of assholery and authoritarianism will have broad appeal within his party.

(9,072 posts)It's a big story on the Right.
One thing I wish people on this board got is that right-wing politicians don't just seize things out of the blue. Usually the stories are prominent in conservative Republican media spaces. However, since we only read a narrow band of news and opinion, we have no idea what's got them all riled up.
Well, this policy has been getting hammered all week long on the Right.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2022/06/02/noem-lawsuit-trans-inclusive-school-lunch/7490200001/
A new initiative to cut off school lunch funds for schools that deviate from federally-backed transgender policy in classrooms has South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem threatening a lawsuit.
The dispute comes after new rules, proposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that would stop sending money to public schools that prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports or using gender-designated bathrooms of their choice.
. . .
In early May, the USDA announced that K-12 schools would be at risk of losing federal funding for free-and-reduced price meal programming if they do not adhere to federal LGBTQ+ inclusivity policies. The USDA spends more than $14 billion through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) annually, a program that feeds more than 29 million children in the United States each day.
USDA is committed to administering all its programs with equity and fairness, and serving those in need with the highest dignity,USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement when the proposed rule was announced. A key step in advancing these principles is rooting out discrimination in any formincluding discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. At the same time, we must recognize the vulnerability of the LGBTQI+ communities and provide them with an avenue to grieve any discrimination they face."
USA Today is the most neutral source I could find to post here (we're picky about acceptable newspapers). The fact that people think the policy is fake and made up kind of speaks to how limited our scope of knowledge and reading is. Why wasn't this coming culture storm on CNN, MSNBC, etc? It should have been. It's going to be a nice flaming flag waved by the Right into the elections.
This shit should not have been a surprise to anyone. DeSantis is going to hammer it, because he's set himself up as a culture warrior of the Right. Not just a culture warrior, THE culture warrior.
It's kind of his whole thing these days as he positions himself for 2024.

(16,858 posts)Or that somehow folks here are living in an echo chamber.
I'm well aware of the program. It was a rhetorical question on my part. The USDA is enforcing Title IX protections, as it should. The Biden administration isn't "withholding lunches", that's the choice of states that choose to allow for unbridled bigotry like DeSantis is choosing for Florida. I'm sick of people like DeSantis and Noem setting the narrative. It's a bullshit, holier than thou attitude that, yes it appeals to the conservatives, but it's flat wrong. Of course DeSantis will hammer this, as he has every other bigoted position he's taken all in the name of combating "wokeness". He may be a warrior for HIS culture but it's not the culture of this country that he represents. We are not a theocracy, yet.

(9,072 posts)Someone claims it's a lie. No checking. Just declare it.
There was a thread about school lunches yesterday. No mention of the story.
In a space where even articles from the NYT are excoriated for being from a right-wing source and Twitter is used as a haven of random, "No idea who this is, but they agree with me," you don't think some bubbling is at work?
It's a bit of breaking news: the sky is also blue.

(14,918 posts)in the same manner one might make a comparison with Napoleon. If there were an equally famous movie of Napoleon, and someone superimposed DeSantis' face on Napoleon's I don't think that would be offensive. I think the clip is a about grandiosity and unbridled ambition. Is a comparison to Cleopatra out of bounds because she was female?

(1,962 posts)Calling him out for his cruelty, his fascism, his bloodthirst, his arrogance and his stupidity should be a civic duty. There's plenty to go after. Blasting this short, fat toad should be done as regularly as breathing, or blinking. Blast him early, blast him often.
THAT SAID... I don't exactly like calling him a "queen". While I get what the person tried to convey in their tweet, calling a cishet a "queen" is just as bad as misgendering a trans person - or even calling them an "it". I'm all for "When they go low, we kick them in the nose"... But this is way, way below the belt.
So, no, "Politically Incorrect Purple SnorkelWhacker." Please, don't call him a queen. Comparing him to Satan, or Hitler, or Pol Pot, or Napoleon? Please proceed. But not this...
Along with the fact that WE DON'T WANT HIM. If he showed up tomorrow with 20 pounds of makeup and a wig and high heels and a miniskirt, we'd plant our boot on his ass and kick him out. "WE DON'T WANT YOU HERE, YOU HIDEOUS TOAD!"
Seriously. We don't want him. And calling him a "queen" feels like guilt by association...
I still hate Florida Nazis.
