(1,931 posts)Nixon conspired with the North Vietnam to not complete a peace plan with Johnson in order to win an election. Id agree with Johnson in a White House taped phone call where he called that treason.
Iran contra. Arms for hostages. Making sure that Carter didnt get the release before the elections.
While not proved in a US court, the political head of Iran in his book "My Time To Talk"
might have mis remembered the title) said that this was true.
Both were conspiracies to undermine elections. Id say both of those were treasonous acts. Both were carried out by deviously smarter groups of people than the 45 crew.

Bani-Sadr, who was president of Iran after the overthrow of the Shah and a close advisor to the Ayatollah Khomeini, reveals a great deal regarding behind-the-scenes U.S. involvement in Iranian politics. Now living in exile in Paris, he breaks his long-held silence to expose the dealings of three U.S. presidents with the Iranians as well as to describe the duplicity of Khomeini, who the author argues betrayed the spirit of the revolution. Bani-Sadr claims that the Reagan election team conspired with the Iranians to withhold the release of the hostages until after the election, thus permitting Reagan to claim the credit. He also makes some interesting comments about the involvement of Reagan and Bush in the Iran-contra arms scandal. This is a tale that is absolutely essential to read in order to appreciate contemporary Iranian politics and the 1979-80 revolution. For a wide audience.

(10,801 posts)to convince him from releasing the Embassy Hostages until after the election,
to keep Carter from looking good.
Iran Contra was selling weapons to Iran so that Hezbollah (ties with Iran), would release hostages.
Then they diverted some of the money from the sale of the weapons to the Contras in Nicaragua.
Both were Reagan.
Then Reagan gave that stupid speech about "... in my heart I wasn't exchanging arms for hostages ..."
and the people bought it.
Reagan had more people indicted from his administration, until Pendejo45 came along.

(5,104 posts)BTW the name of the book by the ousted Iranian president Banisadr is My Turn to Speak: Iran, the Revolution and Secret Deals with the U.S. Washington.
I remember that my two closest friends in college, who were on their way to Lebanon to work as photojournalists/war-correspondents right after graduating scored their first scoop by getting an interview with Banisadr in Paris shortly after he was forced out by Khomeini.
They had the unlikeliest connection to Banisadr thought the Persian owners of Bonzo Burger in Berkeley, where they often ate. Life is funny sometimes.
NOW, trump and the oil company's conspire to put trump back in the white house.

(3,818 posts)Ho Chi Minh cut a pre-election deal with Nixon to delay peace talks in Vietnam. Nixon promised him a "better deal" if he would keep the war going (and keep killing Americans and ARVN forces) until after the elections.
Ronald Reagan cut a deal with Iran to hold American hostages until after the 1980 elections. He traded arms in the deal, illegally sending proceeds to the Nicaraguan Contras against specific congressional prohibitions.
Putin, of course, was instrumental in installing his agent/puppet in the White House in the most egregious example of foreign interference.
It is "normal political discord" for the GOP.
