Mayor Lightfoot has lost her damn mind

Tweet text:

Mayor Lori Lightfoot wants people charged with violent crime to stay behind bars: "When those charges are brought, these people are guilty." They have a presumption of innocence, she says, but the CCSAO's high standards mean they're guilty if they get charged.

Well if they're known to be guilty, then we can save a lot of money by just skipping their trial too, right?

Sad that she claims to be a democrat.

3. She thinks courts should set bail higher, or deny it entirely, for violent crimes?

then say that. a lot of people agree with that.

a lot of people also won't like how large the jails get, or how much money they use holding those so accused.

6. Nothing new. Judges have always been able to deny bail in

various defined circumstances, including when believed appropriate for public safety. The laws vary from state to state, and of course from federal v state.

Just looked, and IL comprehensive justice reform reform in 2021 eliminated cash bail and made various other liberalizing changes. Some opposed and claimed it'd put criminals on the streets to run amok. Didn't look farther, even though there's plenty on the web, knowing there would be provisions to hold people who might pose defined risks, and that there are of course various claims being made about what the changes mean. This is an election year, after all. Also always possible that some provisions might be found in practice to need further tweaking to work better.

Read about it to know what she's talking about.

There have been numerous shootings in Chicago lately where the suspect is out on bail. Many of them for previous gun crimes. These people should not be on the street.

8. Is this an adjustment to the reform on the bail system?

I may be misreading, but this looks more like an adjustment to the pretrial release without cash bail. Her stance seems to be that those accused of violent crime shouldn't qualify for that option, or at a minimum it should at least be more carefully applied.

everybody is blaming the rise in crime on the 'end' of cash bail.
they were already doing it before the reforms were even applied.
she's scapegoating.
