KFC Australia forced to swap lettuce for cabbage

Fast food giant KFC has been forced to put cabbage in its burgers and wraps in Australia as the country is struggling with a shortage of lettuce.

The firm told customers it is using a mixture of lettuce and cabbage after floods destroyed lettuce crops.

It comes as shoppers in Australia have been hit with soaring prices for some fresh fruits and vegetables.

Social media users have posted photos of lettuces costing over A$10 ($7.18; £5.72), three times the usual price.

On its website KFC Australia said: "Due to the recent floods in NSW [New South Wales] and QLD [Queensland] we're currently experiencing a lettuce shortage. So, we're using a lettuce and cabbage blend on all products containing lettuce until further notice."

Australians gag as KFC uses cabbage for lettuce in burgers amid shortages

A controversy is roiling the fast-food industry in Australia and prompting consumer complaints. It has to do with climate change, supply chain shortages and inflation — but mostly, with cabbage.

The controversy began when the Australian branch of the fast-food chain KFC notified consumers in some parts of the country that their burgers could taste a little different for a while as some KFC restaurants swapped out the traditional lettuce leaf for “a lettuce and cabbage blend” after deadly floods in eastern Australia earlier this year disrupted agricultural supply chains.

“We’re currently experiencing a lettuce shortage. So, we’re using a lettuce and cabbage blend on all products containing lettuce until further notice,” KFC said, according to Agence-France Presse.

KFC Australia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post on Tuesday.

3. cabbage isn't as sweet as lettuce and its fiber breaks apart slower

So there's a texture and a flavor disconnect for consumers. There's a reason why cabbage--across all cultures--is normally served either in small shreds mixed into a lettuce salad or coleslaw or marinated/pickled into a softer & wetter texture. It's just not as pleasing a food for the normal human palate.

What's the bfd?

We've recently started making tacos at our house using cabbage instead of lettuce and I like it better.

Cabbage is not the point. Food shortages as climate shifts. Drought, floods, heat, pests, disease.

Consider the Irish potato and the Hunger.

Lettuce first, then us.

10. There is a Mexican food restaurant in Buffalo, NY named Lloyd's that puts cabbage on their tacos

It's not because of a lettuce shortage, they've always done this. I had a taco from there about 5 years ago and I didn't like it. I guess I prefer lettuce.

However, they are very popular in Buffalo and have food trucks and restaurants. My daughter loves their food.
