Trump call on Jan. 6 to 'walk down to the Capitol prompted Secret Service scramble
snip..............
The agency had rebuffed Trumps early entreaties, but the rushed effort on Jan. 6 to accommodate the president came as Secret Service personnel heard Trump urge his rally audience of nearly 30,000 people to march to the Capitol while suggesting he would join them. Their mission was clear, he said: pressure weak Republicans to refuse to accept the election results that made Joe Biden the next president.
Were going to walk down to the Capitol, he told the crowd.
Witnesses have told the House Jan. 6 committee that, immediately after Trump made that remark, Secret Service agents contacted D.C. police about blocking intersections, according to the people briefed on the testimony. Police officials declined, as they were stretched thin due to their role monitoring numerous protests and later assisting with a growing mob at the Capitol, the people said. A senior law enforcement official told The Washington Post that the presidents detail leader scuttled the idea as untenable and unsafe.
A D.C. official on Tuesday confirmed the Secret Service sought D.C. police for help with a presidential motorcade on Jan. 6.
We were asked, and the response was no, said Dora Taylor-Lowe, a spokeswoman for the D.C. deputy mayor that oversees the police department.

(9,470 posts)It would have been harder for him to wash his hands of the violence if he was physically there and did nothing. And there would be video of it all.
I suspect that the Biggest Loser bailed on the Proud Boy and 3% losers because if he went to the Capitol and did nothing as they stormed it, he wouldn't have an alibi.

(5,821 posts)... on 1/6 when he saw the people in the crowd, he made some derogatory comments about what sort of people they looked like.
I remember thinking who did he think his supporters are? High class, educated, erudite people?
I suspect he didn't want to be anywhere near the low-class unwashed mouth-breathers.

(82,849 posts)I think it was on CNN, and a reporter was walking with the mob and talking with one of the insurrectionists somewhere back in the pack. The reporter asked him if he thought President Trump would be at the Capitol, and he said that Trump was up front somewhere, leading the march. He was quite sure of it. This, of course, after Trump had told the mob to march down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol, and that he'd be right there with them. That statement by Trump doesn't seem to have registered with any of our bulldogs of the Fourth Estate, none of whom (from what I can see) thought it was offered in all seriousness, just a way to rev up the mob some more, or somewhere in between and the Secret Service actually put its foot down and said there was absolutely no way President Trump would be heading to the Capitol with the violent mob he had assembled and set in motion.
