Bannon, a conservative firebrand who previously served as former President Donald Trump's chief strategist and senior counselor, was charged with two counts of contempt of Congress in November 2021 after refusing to testify and produce documents. He has pleaded not guilty.
Last week, Bannon's legal team subpoenaed 16 lawmakers and congressional staffers to testify at the July trial and produce documents, according to one of Bannon's attorneys and copies of the subpoenas provided to CNN. The subpoenas were aimed at all nine members of the select committee, three committee staffers and General Counsel for the House of Representatives Douglas Letter. Bannon also subpoenaed House Democratic leadership, including Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Rep. Jim Clyburn.
A spokesman for the House committee declined to comment. Spokespeople for Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn did not immediately respond to requests to comment.

(5,840 posts)The accused can't subpoena the entities investigating them. Whatever they have on him is brought out in trial and it's called "discovery," isn't it?

(9,162 posts)discovering what the other side has prior to trial. However, Pelosi and Congress arent on the other side. Thats the DOJ. Bannon is attempting to turn the trial into a circus. I assume there will be motions to quash these subpoenas, and that most, if not all, will be granted.

(2,642 posts)What is the defense's theory justifying Bannon's refusal to comply with a Congressional subpoena?
I'm sure whatever the theory is stretches credulity.

I have never heard a defendant issue subpoenas in retaliation before. I suspect you're right - it's just a circus.
Who is paying his legal bills, I wonder?

(12,646 posts)It's a waste of time, because he and his lawyers really don't want Pelosi or the J6 committee to testify at his trial.
His own interviews, podcasts, and TV show helped build the case against him. It's like a thief asking to see the security tapes that have his face clearly in view while he's opening the company safe and putting the money in his own monogrammed gym bag.
Now, if he's going for an insanity plea...
