Buy an EV, carpooling, use public transportation, hold public protest in front of gas stations for price gouging,

(8,910 posts)buy gas from the greedy big oil but by gosh I'll not buy anymore than I absolutely am forced too.

(59,522 posts)is about to fry us alive is a bit short sighted.
We should be thinking about slashing our gas consumption so that our species can survive. Sticking it to the oil companies should be a nice byproduct, not the main purpose.

(4,390 posts)why can't the govt impose a tax on those profits -- and do it right from the pump?

(10,922 posts)Last month, Britain's Conservative government announced that the U.K. will impose a 25% windfall tax on oil and gas profits, which is expected to raise $19 billion to support low-income households struggling with a significant spike in the cost of living.
"If Britain's Conservatives can do it," Reich said Monday, "so can Biden."

(2,160 posts)it's revenue. But many posters are too fiscally ignorant to know the difference, and the tax laws.
Why do we (Democrats) seem to have such a problem with the concept of supply and demand?

(5,553 posts)In California we are paying $1.18 in taxes per gallon for federal and state, the government is already getting their share at the pump.

(17,151 posts)Thats why people are driving very small economical cars instead of full size trucks and SUV and mass transit is so prevalent
People here are always posting that gas is cheaper here than many other countries and that's why.

(5,553 posts)What makes you think the oil companies would eat the tax increase and not pass it on to consumers? I thought the point was to protest the oil companies not the taxpayers.

(5,006 posts)Don't run your car in the morning just to heat it up before you get in. Wear a jacket.
Don't use your car a/c if possible, just roll down the windows (at low speeds, when air temp is appropriate).
Don't sit in your car with the engine running while waiting for someone or talking on the cell phone, turn the engine off.
Don't drive round 'n round a parking lot looking for the closest spot to the store. Take the first one that is reasonable.
Don't accelerate as you approach a stop light or stop sign.
Don't speed (every 10mph reduces fue efficiency by 14%)
Accelerate modestly rather than all at once (worst fuel effeciency is when you are accelerating too fast just to save literally a couple of seconds).

(8,910 posts)do all of these things that you all have listed and stay disciplined about it we could possibly drive the price back down...🤷♂️

(130,536 posts)Oil is produced internationally and traded on an international market. Even if some part of the high prices are attributable to price gouging, it's mainly on account of instability and less availability arising from the war in Ukraine and the aftermath of the pandemic. Some temporary measures might alleviate the situation a bit - some governors are calling for the suspension of gas taxes to temporarily lower fuel prices, though that will take money away from road projects. The White House is releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and taking steps to ease some emissions rules over the summer to increase the availability of gas. More domestic oil production, as some GOPers want, is arguably a way to decrease reliance on imported oil, but the basic problem - supply vs. demand - won't be affected by protesting. Using EVs, bicycles, public transportation and carpooling will save you money, but protesting in front of gas stations, which are just retail businesses that have absolutely no control over prices, is just stupid.

(3,819 posts)Across the street from me is a demolition crew cleaning up after a house fire. During their lunch break, they relaxed in the crew cab of a 10 cylinder pickup with their phones plugged in. Of course, the truck was running at idle to make sure the cell phone did not die.
I notice that on construction sites, trucks often sit for long periods with engines running. City inspectors leave THEIR trucks at idle when visiting construction sites.
What is wrong with these people?

(2,160 posts)the air conditioning running. Don't want to come back to a hot vehicle interior.
Alos, some modern trucks like my son's F150 Powerboost hybrid run the engine to power the electrical outlets in the bed to supply electricity to power tools, or even a house.

(59,522 posts)your legislator and asking that the inspectors office budget be reduced because clearly they have too much money if they are wasting it this way. Then put that in writing in an email. Then copy the inspectors office chief when you do contact your legislator.
Have your friends do the same.

(60,186 posts)There was a mass outcry to the members of the Bundestag (Parliament), and they reduced the tax on gas to the point where prices dropped ten per cent in a day (!!!), and the oil companies are under pressure to join in the act and reduce their prices as well. Their argument is that existing stocks cost more, and price drops will be "soon," but the public isn't buying it.
Of course, with prices at the pump scratching $$10 per US gallon, dropping the price to $9, while appreciated, is still in stratospheric heights.
By the way, since they slyly put VAT on the entire pump price, instead of as a supplemental tax, the government was collecting tax on the tax (!!!!!). they were paying Value Added Tax on both the gas AND the mineral oil tax that was an integral part of the pump price. Something like 13 Euro cents out of every liter was tax on the tax, which is literally unconstitutional here, since the German Constitution expressly forbids double taxation. That is why a wealth tax failed at the constitutional level. It seems such a tax was arbitrarily applied to a certain ethnic group in Germany some 85 years ago, and it left a rather bitter taste in post-war memories. But sneaking it into a tax on gasoline was very clever. While illegal, no one was going to mount a class action suit for a tax that cost them a few Euros a week, so they got away with it until now. A friend of ours is a judge on the tax court here, and agreed the tax on the tax was absolutely illegal, and he would strike it down if it were to come before him. But no one has ever mounted the suit. However, a large numbers of members of parliament were deluged with local anger, and THAT got their attention.
Like Tip O'Neill said, all politics is local.

(17,151 posts)The governor wanted to add an additional 42 cents a gallon tax increase a few years ago, but the legislature wouldn't go along with it. I can just imagine the outrage now had it gone into effect.

(60,186 posts)In Germany, it is unconstitutional, but who is going to mount a national class action suit over something that costs them 8.21 (or whatever it comes out to) every two weeks?

(39,086 posts)gas prices went down didn't they? You can still double up on trips, try to shop more locally, walk or ride a bike.
I have a truck that gets 18 MPG and a Honda CRV that gets 30 MPG, I drive the CRV unless I have to use the truck.
I haven't spent any more on gas this year than last.
I find it amusing sometimes when I hear people complaining about inflation. Yet I drive by Starbucks and there are
two lanes of cars lined up to buy a $6-7-8 cup of coffee. McDonalds, Chik-fi-la and Burger King have a line waiting all day.
On weekends all the higher end sit down restaurants have people waiting to be seated. I know it is hard if you have a low income but it sure looks like most of us are doing pretty good.
