Now, as I recall, this is just the 2nd time I've filled those cans since April but wow. I'm SO glad I'm a homebody. And it helps that I live smack dab in the center of major retail area so most places I need to shop are within less than 2 miles.

(34,481 posts)My car since the pandemic began. Glad we can avoid at least part of the oil price gouging.

So sad they shut that make down.

(36,747 posts)That car gets 40-45 mpg on highway runs.
Of course, GM killed the model.

(26,291 posts)Right now I'm driving a Craftsman. I have a huge corner lot AND an equally huge back lot to mow. I wish I could just rent a herd of goats for that back lot.

(20,878 posts)Depending on the time of year, it is $60-$120 a month.
It is a company that rehabs young people with addiction problems. Its called "Teen Challenge". There were a few problems in the beginning by the sure have the equipment to knock out my 1.3 acre lot is about 20 mins. or so (depends again on the time of year).
That is worth it to me!

(31,902 posts)And bought an electric lawn mower this year. Last one died in April after 9/10 years - bought second hand. We have a large property with very little lawn. Working for us.
I don't know what people who have huge lawns do - or if they have to spend about 1K for those extended batteries.

(26,291 posts)I don't mind mowing, although I hate the noise.

(7,509 posts)It uses about .40 cents per charge.

(13,576 posts)Quiet. Battery lasts a long time. Good enough to completely finish the average lawn. Does as good if not better than the gas mowers I've owned. Self-propelled. Relatively quick recharge. NO GAS!

(26,291 posts)Unfortunately I'm older and have TWO big lots to maintain.

(13,576 posts)Don't exactly know what age has to do with it. I'm 72.
If you really need it, they make a riding mower:

(26,291 posts)I've noticed that most of my neighbors have lawn care companies mow their yards. I can't even begin to imagine what that costs, now.

(3,549 posts)Reach out to local schools, community gardens, food pantries for ideas and help.
Grow good food for people and bees and butterflies.
And stop complaining about gas prices.

(26,291 posts)I think the last time I put gas in my car was when I filled those gas cans, back in April.
And I DO have a veg garden. So far, so good. In my own, very inadequate way, I am trying to lighten my 'footprint'.

(94,737 posts)Our back yard is all plantings. a fountain and a patio. Now mowing required.
Alternatively, get a goat.

(20,878 posts)It does the job but barely.
That said, I had to hire a local landscape company to do the job as it is 1.3 acres of lawn that needs to be cut twice a month (this time of year that is).
I think I needed to buy a better electric mower. The Greenworks mower is good for someone with a small yard but otherwise its not that great. The 100 ft. cord on it is easy to trip on and wow is that a long cord!
I spent $50.00 for 7 gallons of gas the other day where I live. Its pushing $7.00 a gallon real quick!

(13,576 posts)Have them for a leaf blower to clear out the carport and do edging etc. 100 ft. is heavy and tedious to roll back up.
The battery-operated mowers are great and if you have 2 batteries you can change out if you use one up and pop in the fresh one in while the other one is charging. The mowers are as robust as gas operated ones as far as mowing hearty grassy areas.

(36,747 posts)So right now gas is about 50 cents a gallon in 1965 dollars.
The problem is wages have not kept pace with the inflation since 65.
