White supremacist attacks stir GOP fears for safety of White people
By Dana Milbank - good stats refuting these miserable aholes at the link
What are you doing? Whitfield demanded of the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee at their hearing on Tuesday. Is there nothing that you personally are willing to do to stop the cancer of white supremacy and the domestic terrorism it inspires? With breaking voice and sniffles, he added: My mothers life mattered. Your actions here today will tell us how much it matters to you.
Then, Republicans on the panel answered with accounts of violence committed by Black people and antifa.
The Brooklyn subway shooter was a known Black supremacist who called for racial violence, said Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.). The Waukesha attacker was a viciously left-wing Black nationalist bigot. Another Black nationalist gunned down five police officers in Dallas. Cruz went on, about the violence of the antifa riots and the Black Lives Matter riots.
Sen. Chuck Grassley ..
Repeatedly, Whitfield asked the lawmakers what they would do about his mothers death. Republicans, in their refusal to acknowledge the unique harm being done by Carlson, party leaders and white supremacists, gave their answer: not a thing.

Their deflections tells us what we need to know about them, as they assume that everyone is just like them as they project that outlook on their enemies.

(21,430 posts)gun control laws would save both Black and White lives.
Don't get sidetracked into arguing with them about White vs. Black supremacists. Just take their statements on face value and say that both Whites and Blacks have a stake in ending gun violence.
(Cases of White on White massacres could be cited, I guess, like Columbine.)

(21,430 posts)a White supremacist, so that is a huge issue now in Buffalo. That is why the retired Buffalo fire chief was so focused on White supremacy in his testimony about the Buffo shootings. Gun violence is a problem for everyone, but Buffalo is dealing with two issues at the same time, racism and gun violence.
There is nothing more despicable than the cold-hearted response to a man grieving his mother's death and trying to end gun violence and racial violence.

(15,936 posts)So, DO SOMETHING!
If you're gonna go down this path of who kills more people then there should be something to combat gun violence. Perhaps that might end gun violence and stop the killings.

.... Instead, they brought in their favorite all-purpose witness on Tuesday, law professor Jonathan Turley, who argued against the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act and claimed that the Jan. 6 insurrection was not an act of domestic terrorism. But mostly, Turley testified about himself: I have received hundreds of threats against myself, my family, and even my dog.
I am generally viewed as something of a free-speech purist.
I come to this subject as someone who has written, litigated and testified in the areas of terrorism, extremist advocacy, and free speech for decades. I have also represented the United States House of Representatives in litigation.
I should confess to a bias as a Madisonian scholar. ....

5 Years without any convictions for a crime to buy an AR-15 or similar "weapon of war" ?
Seems simple enough to me.
(The 5 years guarantees no one under the age of 21 can buy an AR-!5. and falls in with several other laws already in effect not related to firearms)

(6,685 posts)Antifa is an idea. Like capitalism. Our whole patriotic country was anti fascist until words didn't have meaning anymore. Mussolini wanted fascism to be called corporatism, the joining of government and corporations. Republicans have been doing this for 40 years.

(15,241 posts)But Republican senators declined that invitation, instead turning repeatedly to Turley and to their other witness, former U.S. attorney Justin Herdman, to support their desire not to focus on white supremacists; they wanted to evaluate the threat of terrorism without any sort of analysis of the ideology, as Herdman put it.
In his poignant opening statement, Whitfield spoke of the man who allegedly killed his mother: He did not act alone. He was radicalized by white supremacists. His anger and hatred were metastasized like a cancer by people with big microphones screaming that Black people were going to take away their jobs and opportunities.

Instead of seeing the issue as a threat to ALL citizens,
-Black, White, Brown
-Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other religions
-Rich, middle class, poor
-Men, Women, Children
Any school, workplace, shopping center, mall, place of worship, beauty salon, grocery store, etc.
Every single person can become a victim and any place can become the site of a massacre.
The killers don't care as long as they have their grievance and gun they will kill whomever is in their way.

(10,156 posts)like Republicans defend and make excuses for white supremacists and white nationalists. And unlike white supremacists, black supremacists didn't have a black president in the White House calling them "fine people" or telling them to "stand back and stand by."
