The school district police chief criticized for waiting too long before law enforcement confronted and killed the gunman during a mass shooting at a Texas elementary school did not appear at a City Council meeting in Uvalde on Tuesday, despite being newly elected to the panel.
Mayor Don McLaughlin said he was unable to explain why the district police Chief Pete Arredondo wasn't at the brief meeting. Two weeks ago, 19 students and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Law enforcement and state officials have struggled to present an accurate timeline and details, and have stopped releasing information about the police response.
McLaughlin told reporters at the meeting that he was frustrated with the lack of information.
We want facts and answers, just like everybody else, the mayor said.
Steven McCraw, the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, has said Arredondo, who was in charge of the multi-agency response on May 24, made the wrong decision to not order officers to breach the classroom more quickly to confront the gunman.

Sigh... This guy needs to seriously grow a pair and start taking responsibility for his decisions. He needs to step down from both fucking jobs and let someone who can do them take over.

(76,703 posts)This does not appear to fall under federal jurisdiction.
So, as I understand it, the FBI can always provide resources if requested.
I don't see this CYA crowd as asking for help. They have thought, and still think, they already have all the answers.
So, the FBI can offer, but I doubt that help will be accepted.

(76,703 posts)I don't think it addresses the jurisdictional issue.
Seems it would be up to the Texas Rangers, with the backing of the governor & AG.
Given who holds those two seats, it probably won't happen.
I just don't think the FBI can decide to investigate if no clear violation of federal law has occurred.
I'd like to see it happen, too. But, I don't see how.

(102,793 posts)It's probably as sticky as you imply, however...
WASHINGTON (AP) The Justice Department has named a team of nine people, including an FBI official and former police chiefs, to aid in a review of the law enforcement response to the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead.
