Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) this week linked mass shootings to "the overuse" of "dang smartphones."
At a House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday, Fallon rejected the call for new gun regulations following the recent mass shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas.
"Guns have always been readily available in this country but mass shootings and particularly mass shootings of schools were non-existent or extremely rare until they became a grisly recent phenomenon," he told the committee.
"So what's changed in the last 50 years?" Fallon asked. "There's been a noticeable breakdown of the family, there's been an erosion of faith and there's been a seismic drop in social interaction in large measure due to the overuse of these dang smartphones and the proliferation of social media, which is probably better described as anti-social media."

(15,698 posts)50 years ago kids had guns in the back of their trucks at school to go hunt after school. Today something is out of control. Too many guns is definitely part of it. Its a multi problem that must be fixed now.

(100,040 posts)There's online groups that are openly and actively encouraging young people to buy weapons like AR-15s and use them in places where lots of people gather. Because... "it's cool for active shooter stuff". They think it's a game or a joke. It's neither of those things, there's real world consequences.

We're actively becoming the countries we claim to despise because of this shit.

(13,909 posts)Hint, it wasnt young people. Also violent crime (murder, rape) rates were higher in the 70s, 80s and 90s, when todays young people werent even alive. Granted, mass shootings are way up and its young people who are the culprits. But overall, I like this generation of kids. Much more tolerance of diversity.

(100,040 posts)Trust me, I'm in this age group and I know several people in this demographic that are dyed in the wool Trumpsters and MAGA / Q holes. These are the kind of people who likely have Fox News turned to every TV in the house and buy the horseshit that Alex Jones sells in the Infowars store. They are also likely to be the ones who are radicalized and targeted by Putin's troll army in Russia and flipped to the side of crazy. And that's the kind of thing we need to worry about tricking down to our high school age children. They're the ones who are just learning how to navigate the internet and there's a lot of toxic shit out there that's aimed squarely at them, whether it's through gaming or social media.
I also realized that I sound like this guy in my previous post:

while the other 3 fingers of the hand point out and self-implicate the obvious cause of the problem.
