Pastor Dillon Awes of the Stedfast Baptist Church in Hurst, Texas had a very specific call for violence against LGBTQ people in sermon from this weekend.
Entitled Why We Wont Shut Up, his sermon was about the solution for the homosexual, which he said is murder.
What does God say is the answer, is the solution, for the homosexual in 2022, here in the New Testament, here in the Book of Romans? Awes asked. That they are worthy of death! These people should be put to death!
Every single homosexual in our country should be charged with the crime, the abomination of homosexuality, that they have, he continued. They should be convicted in a lawful trial. They should be sentenced with death.
They should be lined up against the wall and shot in the back of the head! Thats what God teaches. Thats what the Bible says. You dont like it? You dont like Gods Word, because that is what God says.
Stedfast is one of the most hateful churches in the country, and its pastors have repeatedly called for death to LGBTQ people.

They were evicted this year after losing an appeal for violating their lease, which prohibits threats and violence. They also had to pay attorney's fees. All on record, including the demonstrated pattern of hate speech.
They're relocated to a rundown strip mall in Watauga, where gay pride demonstrators make sure everyone knows what congregants are.

(29,149 posts)And I think that's more likely to come from someone who is straight (especially one raised in a homophobic religious tradition) than from someone who is gay.
If homophobic bigotry comes primarily from self hatred, then we must conclude that gay people are more likely to be homophobic than straight people are. I don't think that's at all what you intended, but it's where the logic leads, which is why we should be wary of jumping to that conclusion.

Some would object to that being said about those who commit murder.
Some for thieves.
Some for liars.
Some for rude assholes.
Some for bad drivers.
Some for Steelers fans.
Some for those with bad haircuts.
Some for redheads.
Some for gays.
Some for Asians.
And we can keep on going.
The Supreme Court has drawn the line at specific calls for imminent violent and unlawful acts. And while it's not perfect, it seems like the best place to me. Anything more than that would allow a government controlled by the next Republican wannabe dictator far too much power to control speech.

The man is proof that there is not the personal God of protestant teachings, for if there was one, the preacher would be stricken down for preaching such hate in God's name. He would be spouting that filth and zap, he would be gone in a flash of light and a puff of smoke. (The God of my Sunday School, could do that standing on his head.)

(11,730 posts)"Thou shall not kill" was only meant for Hebrews in "good standing". The first thing god commanded the Hebrews to do when they reached the "Promised Land" was to round up and kill all of the Canaanite men, boys, and women who were not virgins.
The Bible is not a book of peace. It is basically a book that anyone can look into and take whatever they wanted to justify their actions.

(11,730 posts)But the Christian churches who put the Bible together, put Paul in a place of high importance and that statement that the pastor was quoting to justify his hate, come from Paul's letters to the early Christian Churches. If you are saying that only Christ's direct teachings were valid, then we would lose all other books of the Bible except the 4 Gospels, where Christ was supposedly quoted (even though the gospels were written decades after Christ's supposed death.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. The REAL minister said that Jesus did not command us to point out other people's "sins." (I put that in quotes because I don't think being gay is a sin.)
Instead, the REAL minister said, that we are commanded to testify about how God's grace has saved us.
Too many of the evangelicals forget about the grace of God that is taught in the Bible. Kind of makes me wonder if they understand it at all. If they don't they have no business ministering to anyone.

For that, he was invited not to return home (although he reconciled with his family relatively quickly, and later in life his father came to similar beliefs about Christianity and war (and the death penalty, and LGBT matters, etc.).
Guess it is the difference between really internalizing the true message of Christianity and trying to remocel God after your own image.

If this fake Christian believes that gays should be executed, then I guess he also believes that liars should be executed. And there is also a prohibition against adultery that is widely ignored. The cafeteria Christianity practiced by Dillon Awes is disgusting but typical of the white evangelicals who want to establish their version of sharia law.

You get to live by what Jesus said.
There is no righteousness in this false pastor. He is a pharisee, not a Christ-ian.
Just go with what Jesus said in the Book of Matthew, and you'd never, ever sentence anyone to die.
""Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword." Matthew 26:52
What Jesus said the rules of the Bible are:

(17,530 posts)While there are some good moral lessons, and a smattering of history embedded in the document, you can use the bible to prove or disprove almost any argument. How can there be contradictions if the bible was dictated by a perfect God. If it was not dictated by God, then it is just a bunch of old world philosophers repeating what they had heard from other philosophers, and was then translated by people who had a vested interest in making the document work to sustain their wealth and power.
The idea of a personal God, that dictates the fall of every sparrow, and hears every prayer I find to be absurd. Incredible claims require incredible proofs.
Always remember, and never forget that the same God that sent Jesus, also sent us Ebola, Syphilis, and Republicans.

(36,023 posts)Here's where the Bible got finalized, having been translated from Aramaic, Greek, Coptic, Ethiopian, Gothic, and finally Latin and modern languages.
The First Council of Nicaea, 325 A.D., convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine, finalized the already substantial Bible. It didn't set the Christian canon but led to its formation.
Voltaire started the idea of the pulling together of the canon, and it's pretty damn funny.

There are scores of these paintings of Nicaea; they're almost like a timeline of art history by themselves. Even as an atheist I LOVE this stuff as part of art history!

Also in Leviticus, it says that in the case of adultery, both the adulterer and adulteress must be put to death. So heterosexual infidelity has the same punishment as male homosexual relations.

If we did that, we would probably reduce the population of this country by 60 percent.

The hypocrisy and cherry picking of that verse in Leviticus while ignoring the rest of the chapter or pretty much the rest of the Old Testament (I guess we should actually be thankful for that) highlights the hypocrisy that is woven into religion.
