Has the January 6 committee already failed in its mission. Mika B.
My God. What kind of mental warp does someone have to put themselves through to come up with such a negative statement before the hearings even begins? Technically, no one outside of the committee and their assistants have a clue where this is going. Just didnt have time to listen to statements that were looking to undermine the hearings before it begins. If a juror talked like this during a voir dire, they would be dismissed.

(35,407 posts)charge Trump with something and prevent him from running again? Do you think it will
accomplish either one of those goals? My opinion at this point it is for the history books.

(9,998 posts)Sadly, I dont think the commission ever had much chance at success. Not because they didnt achieve anything, or uncover any crimes, but because nothing was ever likely to come of its findings, because America has become a backwards Shithole with too many citizens who couldnt care less. They care more about whats happening to Johnny Depp than the fact our government almost got overthrown.

Since 1996, fox news, has been warping the minds of people with lies and distortions. In addition, 90% of talk radio fills the airwaves with right wing ideology. Except for a very few broadcasts like Thom Hartman, we have essentially 24/7 of right wing talk radio.
Two hours of prime time will not change a thing.
That being said, it needs to be done, but the right wing outlets will not even broadcast it.

Writing an article, reporting about an article that says the committee has already failed is fucking treasonous.

STFU Mika, Joe, Jonathan, Chuck, Andrea...you did this

(10,274 posts)They need to see a disheveled Donald Trump angrily barge into the hearing room, carrying an AR-15 and wearing a QAnon Shaman horned headdress, screaming "Stop the Steal" while trying to wrest the gavel from Bennie Thompson, as Liz Cheney jumps on his back and punches him in the head. If that doesn't occur within the first ten minutes, the hearing will have failed its mission: to entertain the masses.

Put the conclusion out there before the facts are given.
It's called leading the public to a predetermined conclusion.

(9,146 posts)Which is the article being discussed. Particularly this part:
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/08/opinion/the-jan-6-committee-has-already-blown-it.html
The core problem here is not the minutiae of who texted what to chief of staff Mark Meadows on Jan. 6 last year. The core problem is that there are millions of Americans who have three convictions: that the election was stolen, that violence is justified in order to rectify it and that the rules and norms that hold our society together dont matter.
Those millions of Americans are out there right now. I care more about their present and future activities than about their past. Many of them are running for local office to be in a position to disrupt future elections. Id like the committee to describe who they are, what motivates them and how much power they already have.
This is a movement, not a conspiracy. We dont need a criminal-type investigation looking for planners or masterminds as much as we need historians and scholars and journalists to help us understand why the American Republican Party, like the Polish Law and Justice party, or the Turkish Justice and Development Party, has become a predatory semi-democratic faction.
We need a committee to explore just how close America is to rampant political violence. I had some problems with Barbara F. Walters recent book, How Civil Wars Start, but I wish all the committee members would read it if only to expand their imaginations.
The committee is already seen as a partisan exercise. It gets talked about a lot of in media and political circles, but I don't think the average citizen cares. I've never had it come up in conversation outside of political spaces. Particularly not now with the economy doing what it is doing. If it looks like a naked electoral gambit, it could actually do more harm than good. Some people think this is just like Watergate. Yeah, no. This is not the 1970s.
The main problem is that it took 18 months to get here. If actions had been taken within the first six months, it would be perceived as simple justice by most. But taking forever and timing it before a midterm has a look and feel to it. I know people love Rep. Raskin and his statements, but he often sounds like he's hyping the next Disney+ show.
I just don't think we're going to see a lot of movement out of this. Maybe some, but nowhere near the sea change people seem to think is coming. Only indictments, arrests, and trials matter in all of this. Without those, all we have are tickets to a show. And it isn't even a very interesting show. It's a show most of us saw eighteen months ago and it was written without a third act.
I would watch the hell out of an Act 3.
But we're not there. So for now, meh, I'll glance at highlights on YouTube. Political junkies will get excited about every detail, convinced this is the smoking gun that will completely damn Republicans to the abyss.
Except most people aren't political junkies. So it won't happen. Fitzmas, MuellerTime, and . . . Hearingtine's Day? I dunno. When little changes in the country on account, don't be surprised.
It's a nice exercise, but without results, it's another treadmill.

(4,913 posts)The hearings will intensify the investigations by the DOJ. The majority of the American people will want the DOJ to act and hold all those involved accountable. The hearings are just the beginning.

(9,146 posts)I'm making a guess based on my observations of how people generally behave and have been for the past six years.
At some point, the onus has to be on action and results materializing. I've met people throughout my life who insist Jesus is coming, just wait.
Fortunately, I am not a waiting around sort.
If something comes of all this, I will be very happily surprised. If Jesus shows up tomorrow, I will have some explaining to manage.
What I somewhat worry about is that we'll be handed two slices of bread while insistently being told, "Look at this delicious hoagie we made for you! Isn't it piled so high with meat and cheese?!" Because that sort of thing is just demoralizing.
