Sen. Chris Murphy: Raising the age to buy AR-15-style rifles is off the table in gun-control talks

Business Insider via Yahoo News

Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut confirmed to CNN on Thursday morning that raising the federal age to purchase AR-15-style semiautomatic rifles to 21 is off the table in Senate gun-control talks.

Murphy, the Democrat leading the negotiations in conjunction with Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, framed the shift as one of the compromises that will be needed to get at least 10 Republican votes, given the obstacle of the filibuster.

The compromise, Murphy explained, would be adding "additional scrutiny" to 18- to 21-year-olds looking to buy a weapon like the AR-15, though he stopped short of specifying that some sort of waiting period would replace raising the age.

"I think we continue to try to find a path to 60 votes that includes some provision that recognizes these 18- to 21-year-olds tend to be the mass shooters, and that many times, they have juvenile criminal records or past histories of mental health that should prohibit them from buying a weapon," Murphy said, adding he thinks there is some Republican support for raising the age, but not enough to meet the 60-vote threshold to clear the filibuster.

The delay tactic of portraying themselves open to bipartisan reform and then killing everything after people get tired of the latest crisis is in effect as predicted.

Nothing will change -- the (R)'s count on people forgetting about this come November because their allies in teh corporate (especially in oil and gas) willsee to it that greedflation will be rampant that they will blame on the Do-Nothing Democrtas who controlled congress and did nothing to help you with the price of high gasoline, high natural gas, and other high prices.

They will count on the sheeple to ignore the fact that the (R)'s blocked literally every effort to do something. Likely, theywill be right.

Our nation is doomed.

Maybe a job for me will open up in New Zealand or some other functioning democracy.

The repukes idea of negotiations is basically give them 99% of what they want, and they will give you 1 %. When you don't go for it, they will be in front of every news microphone in the country saying they tried to negotiate, but the Democrats wanted to destroy the 2d amendment.

No R is EVER going to vote for any gun restriction anyway.

Let them vote down a bill to ban assault weapons.

Let them vote down a bill to expand background checks.

Let them vote down a bill to raise the age of owning certain guns.

Let them vote down a bill to expand mental health services.

Let them vote down a bill to reduce the size of magazines.

Let them vote down a bill to eliminate semi-automatics.

Let them vote down each and every suggestion they can come up with to try to stop the massacres. Then make campaign ads out of all of it.

1st) It will give the GQP something that they can claim as a win going into the 2022 election, "See we are not evil we support gun control, you can still vote for us"

2nd) After this law does nothing to stop gun violence the GQP will claim "See we tried it your way and it doesn't work, the only thing that works is MORE GUNS. Vote for us, only the GQP knows how to fix this"

he went on about how we can’t “let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” and “neither side will get everything they want.” Just stop, it’s embarrassing. Any compromise with the GOP will be a big old flabby nothing. It’s been said a million times, but if they aren’t moved by 19 children blown to shreds, then they won’t be moved by anything. The only way forward is getting more Democrats in the Senate, and giving Republicans cover like this ISN’T helping that goal.

By the time they get done, this will boil down to a bunch of meaningless platitudes and a non-binding “order” directing each state to look into gun regulation actions they can live with.

This is bullshit and every Democrat negotiating this deal should see it for what it is - a total waste of time giving the GQP cover to say “they tried.”
