loose millions of Lone Star ticks and they are spreading across the country quickly.
Their bite makes people allergic to meat.
Not really but the ticks are spreading due to warming and their bite does make people allergic to meat. That can't be good for the meat industry.

They are brown with a white dot.

(22,340 posts)So, how exactly does a tick cause a meat allergy? Researchers believe it happens when the tick first bites an animal host, like a deer. The tick picks up alpha-gal, a type of sugar molecule found in most mammals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Then, when it bites a human, the tick transfers alpha-gal to the human's bloodstream where the person may become sensitized to it and develop an allergy.
Alpha-gal is also present in meat products (including beef, lamb and pork) as well as some dairy products, such as ice cream. If someone who is already sensitized to alpha-gal due to a lone star tick bite eats one of those foods containing this sugar, that can trigger their allergic symptoms.
The number of people affected by alpha-gal syndrome is growing, and the condition is most common in the Southeast, TODAY previously reported. As many as 3% of all Americans could have an alpha-gal allergy. Arkansas, Virginia, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Missouri have the highest case rates per 100,000 people. Cases have been detected as far north as Maine and Washington state.

(12,640 posts)We have lots of them in our city neighborhood, lots of greenbelt and open area around us, due to the fact we are a costal city of crinkly bits -mesas and canyons.
But I'm still going to warn the other grandparents to make sure they have bug repellent on them when taking the girls out hiking or camping.

(15,933 posts)I read where they can have a litter (?) within 14 days. Fast track those babies.
And certainly protect yourselves out and about in Mother Nature 🙏

(12,640 posts)Came around a curve in a hilly residential area (slowly), and out of the misty dark rearing up to full length in the middle of the road, teeth bared was a huge Mamma Possum. And a few of the babies on her back also poked their heads around and bared teeth at my Ranger.
Almost screeched to a halt about two yards in front of her. She must have raised herself up to nearly 3 ft. tall, it looked like she could raise herself over the hood of my small truck at the time.
She looked like a C'thulu Possum. She featured in dreams afterwards for years.
