Derrick Johnson, the president of the NAACP, called for the resignation or dismissal of Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio for his Wednesday comments about the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
"It is time for Jack Del Rio to resign or be terminated," Johnson said in a statement. "His comments could not have been more offensive and ignorant. The January 6th insurrection an attempted coup was far from a 'dust-up'. Each day we learn more and more on just how close our democracy came to autocracy. Downplaying the insurrection by comparing it to nationwide protests, which were in response to a public lynching, is twisted. You cant coach a majority Black team while turning your back on the Black community. It's time for you to pack up and step off the field."
Del Rio apologized for his comments, which were in response to a question about a tweet where he asked for the "whole story" about protests during the summer of 2020. Those protests some of which were attended by NFL players were in response to the murder of George Floyd and the deaths of other Black people at the hands of law enforcement.
Peoples livelihoods are being destroyed, businesses are being burned down, no problem, Del Rio said after Wednesday's practice. And then we have a dust-up at the Capitol, nothing burned down and were going to make that a major deal.

(46,037 posts)Five people died that day.
Someone has to remind these folks that the burning and killing during the BLM protests were done by right-wing extremist. The righteous protestors tried to stop them. It's obscene the way the BLM protests are being depicted.

(65,000 posts)There are 2 major examples of players affecting immediate change in their team management.
You're wrong about this, but you're probably used to that.
It happens when the role played is always the contrarian.

(8,426 posts)Hence my comment. I was thinking when the Miami Dolphins gave up on Jimmy Johnson in spectacular fashion back in 2000.

(36,416 posts)The Washington Commanders have fined defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $100,000 following his comments earlier in the week that referred to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol as a "dustup" and compared that day to "riots, looting, burning" during protests in the summer of 2020.
In a statement, Washington coach Ron Rivera said he met with Del Rio on Friday morning to express his disappointment in the coordinator's comments.
"His comments do not reflect the organization's views and are extremely hurtful to our great community here in the DMV," Rivera said. "As we saw last night in the hearings, what happened on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was an act of domestic terrorism. A group of citizens attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election, and as a result lives were lost and the Capitol building was damaged."
The fine money will be donated to the U.S. Capitol Police Memorial Fund, Rivera said. The Capitol riot left more than 100 police officers injured, and five police officers serving at the Capitol on Jan. 6 died in the days and weeks afterward.

(99 posts)...not to repeat comments clearly heard from white, caucasian talking heads on Fox News?
If anyone can't grasp the reasons behind the nationwide protests of that summer in response to the systemic racism that continues to this day in American society, no amount of congressional hearings will ever help them understand.
Besides that, the GOP would just white-wash the problem or blame anti-racists.
