South Africa seems to be a hub for new waves and new strains. That strikes me as odd.

Had been seeing stories about BA.4/5 in NY and it wasn't on CDC's tracker last week but is now!

I think SA has proven to be a decent predictor of what will happen here.

They are simply the most likely in sub-saharn Africa to have the means and ability to ID new strains. That's why they get ID'ed there first.
