The chairman of the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack says he would welcome Donald Trump, the former president, to come testify, but made clear it would have to be under oath.
We wanted to prove that this wasnt something that just happened. It wasnt a normal congressional tour and wasnt traditional speech, Chairman Bennie Thompson told MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace Friday afternoon on Deadline White House, after his highly-successful Thursday night primetime hearing.
Thompsons traditional speech remark appeared to be a dig at Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel who said in February insurrectionists and rioters were merely engaging in legitimate political discourse.
This was a riot, Thompson continued. This was an insurrection that was planned and orchestrated by Donald Trump.

(13,180 posts)I watched Kellyanne on Maher yesterday, and one of her "Kellyannes" was that the committee hadn't tried to get Trump's testimony. I hope a whole bunch of the right were using that talking point, because Thompson slamming it down is a great way to highlight Trump's cowardice. Trump would raise the (already huge) primetime audience by an order of magnitude. Those hundreds of millions would then watch Trump either take the fifth or prepare to be measured for an orange jumpsuit.
I even think Thompson should request Trump's testimony live in the next hearing. Make it clear to everyone that Trump was asked. Then, when Trump takes a pass, Thompson can announce that in the following hearing and add it to the record. Add it to the record in every hearing after the request.

(32,079 posts)Why wouldn't they want him to testify on his own behalf? It would not only help shut down the "partisan witch hunt" narrative, but it would also give Trump the opportunity to be Trump. The whole world could watch him publicly hang himself, since is a bloody imbecile. It's a win-win for the Democrats.
