GOP Slapped Down Again For Jan. 6 National Guard Lie

Fact checker called out Republican leaders Friday over newly resurrected claims that President Donald Trump was not responsible for a no-show by the National Guard during the Jan. 6 insurrection last year.

Trump has repeatedly blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for blocking some 10,000 members of the Guard that day. But Pelosi has no control or jurisdiction over the National Guard in the District of Columbia. Trump does.

A number of media outlets, from USA Today to The Washington Post and CNN have debunked Trump’s claims that he called out the Guard and Pelosi blocked them protecting the Capitol.

Trump even boasted in a videotaped statement a day after the 2021 insurrection that he “immediately deployed the National Guard and federal law enforcement to secure the building.

Two sources familiar tell me that @SpeakerPelosi & @MayorBowser have asked for the national guard to come to Capitol Hill to clear rioters. One of those sources says DOD has not yet approved change-of-mission for the DC guard.

Interesting that at 2:56 pelosi and mayor bowser were working on contacting the national guard, but it was almost an hour later that Kayleigh Mcninny texted that Trump had called them in. Was she just making sure that Trump got the credit?

21. There was quite a bit pundit mention of the demands for McCarthy to "do something"

and demand that 45 "call off" the hoards. He first tweeted something about "being peaceful" and later put out some nonsense video.

I was watching it live as the session was going on inside and the chambers had broken away to debate objections when I think Lankford was speaking and suddenly he stopped and they called for recess subject to the call of the chair because apparently the insurrectionists were in the building and this was not long after 1 pm ET. I think at that point, CSPAN (which I normally watch) had started showing some of what was going on outside and inside and I switched to other channels.

The NG were "visibly seen/shown" rolling up in buses and deploying between 4 pm - 5 pm ET and Congress reconvened around 6:00 pm ET to continue where they left off. And since this was in January, it was already near dusk and much of the crowd had already left.

I have to scan CSPAN's video archives....

ETA - I ended up staying up until ~4:30 am the next morning to see them finish out the whole certification process.
