This traffic stop between a Black man and a White state trooper began with fear. It ended with a surprising act of kindnessCNN
At first glance, it looks like another of those viral photos that we can barely watch anymore.
It shows a White state trooper and a Black man during a traffic stop on a bright, sunny day. The trooper is leaning his thick arms through the open passenger window to clutch the Black mans right hand. The mans back is pinned against the passenger seat, and his eyes are squeezed shut. He appears to be wincing in pain.
But this photo is being widely shared for another reason. The trooper is reaching into the car to help, not to harm. And the encounter has been described by those who witnessed it not as tragic, but inspired.
It was a really beautiful moment for me to see this take place between my dad and the officer, said Ashlye V. Wilkerson, the 39-year-old driver of the car who surreptitiously took the photo.
The state trooper still has trouble digesting what happened that afternoon.

I don't know about you, I get weepy these days. I hear a good story, an act of kindness, with all the bad happening around us. Well it makes me cry and gives me hope.

(6,017 posts)But a long form article celebrating sexism & southern christianity at a time when both are being used as weapons makes me think this doesn't really pass the sniff test.

(70,070 posts)in this case, there's a book, w rules. a very ambiguous book, it's true.
but it can be and sometimes is used a map to truly ethical behavior, and self sacrifice. those that live the beatitudes are the best of us.
there are real examples of true scotsmen.
and ftr, i'm a devout atheist. i'm ONLY grateful that i wasnt raised in my homeland because i would have been a subject of the irish catholic church, one of the worst out there, still. my sister would have been a slave in one of their 'homes'. my sisters who happily raised 4 kids would have been saddled w 10.
but i have known many who walked the religious path w an ethical code that this atheist can only hope to live up to.
i get what you're saying. i do. but i cant see any lines this officer crossed in this incident.
doesnt mean he never did or never will.
maybe cuz i spent a few yrs as a hospice volunteer i have a built in bias here, but see no harm in a little light on someone doing it well.

(6,017 posts)What they were celebrating was not just a human comforting another human.
There was a raft of other social values being celebrated in that article that are simply slipped in with the comfort. It's a way of normalizing a certain set of values by implying the equating of them with one that is undeniably good and proper.

(219 posts)You'd have a different perspective. You'd be able to imagine how badly this could have turned if the driver had declined. And if pressed, finally admitted, "I get that you mean well, but I don't believe in that, because I'm an atheist/Buddhist/Jew/whatever."
Because I can assure you that learning a driver isn't a xian can turn some cops mean, in a hurry. I won't bore you with my horror stories, but I know full well how cops, especially in the backwoods hellholes of small-town America, can make your life a living hell if you're not the "right kind."
So maybe try walking in someone else's shoes for why they might be wary of a story like this. Until you've been there, you can't imagine what it's like to have an answer to a question like that which a cop might not like hearing.

(17,523 posts)is that it is so unusual that we find it newsworthy.
BREAKING NEWS: "White Cop show compassion to black man; DU celebrates!" It should be a boring story.
