As we've mulled over the people and circumstances that wound up thwarting the attempted coup on January 6th, I think we've overlooked one of the most obvious causes of its failure: the arrogant stupidity of its orchestrators and participants.
Nothing says "spontaneous event" like an email announcing "be there - will be WILD!" Nothing says "it all just happened" like a pre-constructed gallows being erected while the crowd chanted "hang Mike Pence!"
Nothing says "we can say it was Antifa" like a trail of RW money being used to bus Trump-humpers to DC - complete with signage declaring who they were.
When you consider all of the audio, all of the video, all of the texts and phone calls exchanged, it's amazing that The Gang That Couldn't Coup Straight honestly thought they'd so cleverly covered their tracks, shhhh, no one will ever suspect a thing.
I fully anticipate that in the weeks to come, the Jan-6 Committee will be presenting emails that say "What are you wearing to the insurrection tomorrow?", or "Are you free to meet-up for drinks after we overthrow the government", or "Be honest - will being part of destroying democracy make me look fat?"
When all is said and done, arrogant stupidity will prove to be the ultimate downfall of Trump and his enablers - the idiots who believed that following the dictates of an obviously corrupt, lying, orange-faced buffoon represented a clear path to overturning a centuries-old democracy while nobody noticed.

(35,669 posts)Of American political discourse. Because of this economic system which is based on greed and materialism, our adversary positions itself to appeal to the stupid. Thats all they can do to stay alive.
Hence we get the lowest standard of policy ideas because they have to manufacture fake outrage to distract from the real problems at hand. Dog forbid that we talk about the climate.
Only one political party actually tries to improve conditions in our country because the other needs to manufacture hysteria to get some form of engagement.

(8,922 posts)They were so used to watching him get away with everything that they thought it extended to them too. They thought it was going to be one big party where they could say or do anything they wanted to and then just go home and go back to their regular lives. Like you say, arrogant stupid.

Of course, in a world of Foxsuckers, they might have figured they could get away with, « you can watch now, but well tell you later what it was that you really saw. » Thats how a violent coup attempt turned into a guided tour. Want to know which Republican members of Congress were in on it? Start by interrogating the ones who parroted that line. That should lead to the real organizers who have a very realand, I hope, justifiedfear of being exposed, interrogated, arrested, humiliated, and jailed for life for treason.

(90 posts)The one great thing about fascists is that they lack imagination and tend to be intellectually lazy. The coup attempt illustrated this in fine resolution.
But one day soon, they'll get some smarter people with a better plan in position. If we don't head that off by figuratively rolling heads SOONER, then our democracy is lost.
