We will have to wait and see what is the bill. I fear the Democrats will be happy if they can get the Republicans to agree to anything. They will see it as a win. However, the bill may not make much of a difference when it comes to gun violence. We know how Republicans are. They could say in the future, see we passed gun legislation and it does not work.
The democrats should play hardball in my opinion. They have the Republicans up against the wall on this issue. They should demand things like universal background checks at the least. Simple things that will make a difference. Gun registration, banning high capacity magazines, etc.
Maybe they will get more out of the Republicans than I am expecting, have to wait and see.

(1,666 posts)I would not complain if the age to buy any semi-automatic rifle was raised to 21 (I would actually prefer 25). I feel like that one restriction would be a good enough road block to stop at least some 18 year old mass shooters from going through with it.

(4,239 posts)loophole is the worst. A person can claim they are just a "hobbyist" and not a gun dealer and then they don't have to worry about any paperwork or checks. Hobbyist? Sure you are. Several years ago I was in south Texas and I picked up a copy of the San Antonio newspaper Sunday edition. There was a whole big investigative story about the gun stores on the US side of the border selling huge quantities of AK-47 ammunition to gangs who would come across the border in vans and load up the entire van with case after case of ammunition. The article also discussed how they got the ammo back into Mexico. But the most striking part of the article was the indifferent attitude on the part of the gun store owner. He was asked if he didn't find it suspicious for one customer to be buying that large of a quantity of high powered ammunition. His answer was that it was not his concern and as far as he knew they were shooting rabbits and coyotes. Sure thing. Scum like that doesn't care about anything other than their own greed.

(6,176 posts)One thing I would like to see is a national assault weapon database, and a chain of custody for the weapon that would not only identify the person who bought the gun, but require any transfer of the weapon to a new owner to be re-registered.
This would be on top of background checks, waiting periods, mandatory gun safety training, proof that the owner had an approved gun safety cabinet and was actually storing the gun and it's ammunition in it.
And while we're it, as part of the background check, the local police should have to sign a form that attested that you pose no threat to the community. This puts them on record as agreeing that you should have the gun.
Also a ban on bump stocks, silencers, body armor, and the practice of purchasing parts that would allow the assembly of a working gun.
I'm sure I could think of a few more things given time.
But, none of these items violate the "sacred" 2nd Amendment that these gun crazy people throw in your face.

(11,923 posts)People get outraged at a mass shooting of a dozen people with a AR15, but are numb to the dozens shot and killed every single weekend across the country with handguns. Their lives are just as important and their families grieve just as much.
