Here is the main point, You don't spend a lot of time planning an event like 1/6 without believing it would be successful.
The Trump crowd never expected or saw the possibility of failure. Failure is what is going on now. Hearings, people
going to prison, possible high level Trumpers going to prison, people killed, national investigations, video of events,
and so on. Those that planned this thought they would be "successful." Trump was watching on TV, because he
thought everything would turn out in his favor. He expected Pence to go along with the deal. Everything would
be fine when over. Trump would stay in office indefinitely. Of course, he was delusional, but that is at the heart
of the entire story. If Trump knew what was going on, & if he was involved in the planning, (even some of the
planning) then he is, was totally nuts. Thinking he could pull this off, successfully, is the sign of a very deranged
person, and that he could convince others that this could be pulled off, is a sign that they, (all followers, and
going alongers). that they were deranged too.

(24,252 posts)killed every member of Congress, Trump's term as president would still have expired at noon on January 20th. There is no legal mechanism to extend that term.

(23,273 posts)No one asked for pardons before January 6 because they never believed it would fail.
No one who was at the Capitol skipped town until they realized it had failed.
No one tried to blame 'antifa' until they realized it had failed.
No Congress person tried to deny involvement until it failed.
They. Took. Video. Of. Themselves. Committing. Felonies.

They thought they would get parades and medals. Instead, they are getting 3 hots and a cot.

It's unbelievable that an ignorant, preening racist like trump has this huge cult following but here we are...

(34,407 posts)Hes very aware thats hes committing crimes and able to control actions, but thinks nothing really bad will happen to him. He may feel he has to do these things to meet an economic obligation to Putin.
Hes a narcissist, a sociopath, and a classic example of the Dunning Kruger effect.

(111,169 posts)Everybody knew he'd lost fair and square. He's a malignant narcissist who will do anything--and I mean ANYTHING--to stay on top. They were a bunch of fools who bought into the messianic idea pushed by right wing preachers. Yeah, messianic, for that. They didn't care that he lost, Jesus wanted him so they were willing to do what they did. If they had been just a little better organized, I am convinced more people would have lost their lives that day.
As it was, once the hooting morons got in, they had no clue what to do and they seemed to get in the way of the few who did. So they pwned the libbies and took some souvenirs that got them into deep trouble later, and left.
I think most Republicans in Congress knew those hooting morons wouldn't know who was who and even some of the right wingers like McCarthy were initially frightened and angry at TFG. It passed so quickly that now I hope he takes them down with him. It did allow Congress to complete the peaceful transition of power that night, although two weeks later they were kissing TFG's, er, ring.
I'm not letting anyone off on the delusional excuse. They all knew TFG just plain LOST. They betrayed everything this country has ever been by their actions that day and they all knew what they were doing.

(10,823 posts)Trump is a nasty, disgusting greed head who got a taste of power, real power, and liked it. He could do anything he wanted and not be held accountable, the story of his life. The grift was fantastic, better than anything he'd known before. Why give it up?
More worrisome (to me) are the people who sold their souls for someone like Trump, someone who demands absolute loyalty but returns nada. All to be near the Squatter-in-Chief and share in the grift, the abuse of power. These were professionals who knew everything about the Administration was wrong but they went along anyway and did the man's bidding. They were willing to bring down the entire government. Though they had a moment of pause during the actual insurrection, they quickly resorted to form and lied their faces off, desperately trying to cover their tracks.
The whole despicable bunch are still lying, creating chaos and chipping away at the very foundations of the Republic.
As far as I'm concerned, they were seditionists then and they are seditionists now.
The betrayal was/is monumental. The punishment should be equal to that treachery.

(219 posts)People who live in tiny little bubbles detached from reality always think they and their ideas are more popular than they are.
It's the same mentality that Manson had about starting a race war with the murders of Sharon Tate and et al.
It's the same mentality that animates the loonier wing of the left who thinks that everyone in America is just dying to elect extreme lefties.
It's the same mentality that convinced the South that they would be able to kick the Union's ass in a week.
On top of the delusion bubble he occupies, TFG's malignant narcissism has him convinced that everyone loves him, and those of us who say we don't? We don't mean it. Down deep, we love him, too, we just don't want to admit it, because we're being childishly stubborn to get attention.
This is really how he "thinks."
He's so much like my evil father that it scares me.
