If you’ve been watching the Jan 6th Committee hearings — as you should be, because it’s incendiary stuff — something should be becoming very, very clear. The Committee is throwing down a gauntlet, by setting up a case. The biggest case in American history.

The People of the United States of America versus the President Who Attempted a Coup.

The Committee’s work has been methodical and painstaking. They’ve interviewed and deposed witness after witness, from the lowest levels to the highest. Of what they’ve called, in pointed language, a “conspiracy” to foment an “attempted coup” as part of a “sophisticated plan” to “overturn an election.”

Whew. I’m glad someone else finally said it, aren’t you? That’s a joke. It’s not really a joke.

This language is as sharp as the edge of a finely crafted knife. It couldn’t be clearer what its intent is. In official hearings — especially hearings as grave as these — things could have gone many ways. The Committee could have found…that there was no evidence of any kind of conspiracy, plan, coup. It could have concluded it was just a riot, a random event, a sudden outpouring of rage. It could have drawn a clear line between the foot soldiers and the political insiders.
