Depending on which poll you look at, up to a third of the people in this country still believe, in the face of all available evidence, that the election was stolen. Indicting the man who attempted to subvert the constitution and who resisted the peaceful transfer of power is the right thing to do, but that third of the country has almost all of the loons and nut jobs in it who think they don't have to obey laws that they don't like. I'm sure intelligence is keeping an eye on this. But after just one public hearing from the January 6th committee, it's pretty clear that they have a mountain of evidence against Trump and apparently, some members of Congress too.
Nothing that the extreme right claimed would happen if the Democrats got control has happened. But these people can't see anything right in front of their own eyes.

(153,160 posts)IS TRUMP ABOVE THE LAW OR ISN'T HE? *THAT* is what matters, not how his fucked up cult behaves

(34,452 posts)The follow up to January 6th which they alluded to never materialized.
This just makes it even more important to make sure that more Republicans are defeated in November, not just in the house and senate, but in state legislatures as well.

Even normal things start to look different through the eyes of what you are told to believe. Prices go up and it's because its the last days, etc.

(38 posts)We could very well end up with another summer of 2020 leading into the mid-terms.
The house select committee doesn't indict and federal prosecutors are reluctant to pursue charges unless they are almost 100% sure of a conviction.
That's why they have such a high conviction rate.

We cant let fear keep us from indicting trump. If the deplorables riot, they will be dealt with accordingly.

(53,032 posts)Biden has raised concerns that investigations would further divide a country he is trying to unite and risk making every day of his presidency about Trump, said the sources, who spoke on background to offer details of private conversations.
They said he has specifically told advisers that he is wary of federal tax investigations of Trump or of challenging any orders Trump may issue granting immunity to members of his staff before he leaves office. One adviser said Biden has made it clear that he "just wants to move on."
Another Biden adviser said, "He's going to be more oriented toward fixing the problems and moving forward than prosecuting them."
No one has shown any evidence to indicate that has changed.

Of course, when Biden said that he and we had no idea what would be coming just weeks after.
If his philosophy has changed from then, it would be encouraging to know so.

(630 posts)If Trump remained in power, he wouldn't be ordering investigations and indictments against his political enemies.
It would be prison, torture and public firing squads.

(3,859 posts)In the long run, in a democratic society with free speech, that right must be protected. But it is equal protection and there are limits and insurrection goes beyond the limits. I think there are some boundaries that have been crossed in right wing media as well, and that's the source of a lot of the problems.
It's an open question.
