The recent arrest of 31 one paramilitary assholes in Idaho on their way to "disrupt" a Pride Gathering in Idaho is no laughing matter. While I certainly appreciate dark comedy and satire, there have been way too many posts which are seemingly making light of the situation in a way I find disrespectful and disturbing. Thankfully, nothing came of it, and that may be largely in part to a good Samaritan following the "if you see something, say something" mantra.
Six years ago, today, June 6th, another bigoted asshole went into a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida and massacred 49 gay, bi, lesbian, and allied persons in the Pulse Nightclub. Today, it could have happened again, yet some think this is a time for jokes. It isn't! These supremacists and those like them are dangerous, and I will agree, many are so stupid they are easily caught, but there are those who aren't stupid and use mistakes made by these attempts to improve their tactics. We are only HALF-WAY though pride month and cities around the country are having events for the next two weeks. Pride events are soft targets.
Again, while I, like many, try to find humor in bad situations, this is one where I feel we, the GLBT community, dodged a bullet...literally. So, when commenting on the topic, perhaps a bit of respect is owed, at least until the month of Pride is over. Then have at it with the jokes and laughing at the situation.
"They must secretly be faggots!"
STOP! Just FUCKING STOP! MOST homophobes are NOT secret homos! Yes, I know about the two pathetic studies from several decades ago, and yes, I also know all the anecdotal "proof" about self-loathing gay men (funny, we rarely see this "secret homo" charge leveled against homophobic women). When people make this claim, and I also know gay people do it too, it implies that homophobia is because of homosexuality and the crimes against us are BY us; they aren't! Heterosexuals need to OWN their privilege and admit that much of the hate against my community is coming from them, not gay people.
The people who were planning this attack are not isolated. There is a real possibility that what we witnessed today we will witness next weekend with very different results. These people are dangerous, deranged, and despicable. So, while it is good to sometimes laugh at the darkness, it is also important to respect the reality and let me remind you of it....

(45,433 posts)the list of names in OP are victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting. It can be confusing since both are mentioned in the OP
On a related note, an Afghani Muslim terrorist shot up the nightclub but the white guys using violence and intimidation against civilians to pursue a political agenda are not called terrorists due to the whiteness of their skin.

(102,239 posts)appropriately and seriously to this threat. Honestly, do we think that sans some big FBI warning that some other locales would, especially given the infiltration of SOME law enforcement agencies? My immediate reaction to this story was to give some major kudos to that sheriff and his assisting LEO. Damn, right they were plotting violence.
I haven't seen the posts to which you refer--not that they aren't present, but I've had a very heavy work schedule and thus have missed quite a few posts. Not sure dark humor covers all that--especially given most of us are still reeling from Uvalde and all the other recent gun violence. I must say at a very molecular level I just can't fathom the reasoning behind these hate groups. Not to excuse the "closeted" comments--because I cannot, but I think a lot just really cannot fathom what is behind this explosion of hate.

(1,000 posts)From the time of the Charlottesville March I believe we were put on notice that the second Civil War is on. All over this country war is being made on anyone that qualifies as "the other." The LBGTQ community, obviously. You have the misfortune of being in the front seats at the culture war. Just ask Ron DeSantis, Presidential want to be. The messaging would make Joseph Goebbels blush with envy the way the messaging floats so quickly around the rightwingosphere.
As the January 6 hearings have commenced we are again hearing "what insurrection?" "what about the summer of 2020?" "BLM and Antifa" "cities burned to the ground"
Yeah, those BLM marches were being infiltrated and violence was being egged on all over the country. So these people come from all over the country to incite violence at a Pride march? Nah, I am not surprised. And yes I am deeply concerned. Just look at the slate of Republican Candidates, talk about frightening and disturbing.
All I can say is I hope this is an indication that right wing violence is finally getting the attention it has needed since Oklahoma City.

(21,447 posts)This weekend was the opening of the local outdoor summer market in my community. It was dedicated to Pride celebration. Three blocks worth of booths with crafts, baked goods, and early season produce. It was jam packed with LGBTQ people and friends and allies. Several people dressed in rainbow t-shirts and some draped in rainbow capes.
As I strolled along, looking at items for sale, it occurred to me that a hate-filled gun toter could show up to slaughter unsuspecting people. I began looking around to see what buildings in the area might provide shelter if that happened.
Such is the nature of the nation these days. Maybe I am a little more inclined to think of potential slaughter settings, living in NY state, not far from Buffalo where hate shootings are still very much on people's minds.
The fact that a group of haters actually planned on carrying out violence at a celebration and were stopped only by an observant person who alerted law enforcement means that the nightmare I feared in my community nearly happened in another community across the country from me.
I take all threats like this very seriously. I don't know WTF is wrong with people who carry that much hatred toward people just because they exist. But I know that the haters do exist and now feel it necessary to be on the lookout for them in all soft target settings.

(53,956 posts)Tulsa Pride is at the end of the month. My husband and I rarely go in opposite directions at events like that, but it does happen. This year, I really feel we need an emergency plan and a place to meet if something happens and we are not together or get separated. I have always been cautious at pride events, mainly because I don't like huge crowds. I am the person who knows where all the exits are in a theatre. I know how many doors it takes to get to a stairwell in a hotel. I count them. I always listen to the flight attendants, though I have heard the speeches many times. I know where all those exits are too, but I usually count heads, just in case I have to go over people! It is better to be prepared and not need it, then need it and not be prepared.
I intend to have fun at the first Pride outing in two years! However, I am sadly aware of how hate-filled the country has become, especially directed at GLBT people, especially of recent. I won't let them spoil my fun, but I will remain vigilant.

What we don't know is where they got the funding to assemble from all over the country to a single Pride event in a single state. Did they think it would be an easy target? Did someone in ID recruit them for it? Who bought all those plane tickets? And where the hell was the FBI? (1,962 posts)We are in a one-party nation at this point. Over the years, what was one known as the Republican party has become a domestic terrorist organization, and that really snowballed with Drumpf. We now have armed to the teeth psychopaths like these Patriot Front fascists who can't wait to kill "the others," with LGBTQ's at the top of their list. And we have loudmouthed terrorists like DeSatan and Abbutt pushing hatred upon us, with Fux gleefully broadcasting every hateful word and more.
We've seen it before: When the QOP speaks, their armed qult members act. Ask Gabby Giffords.
A terrorist attack was averted on Saturday when these 31 terrorists were arrested. They need to charged with each and every possible crime, and hopefully convicted. Had they gotten their way, there would've been blood and people would've died.
These people - from the politicians on down to their stupid and insane foot solders - want to kill us. Period. This is no culture war. We're basically fighting for our lives at this point. Their goal is to eliminate us.
History is repeating itself, just with LGBTQ's on the top of the list this time instead of the Jewish.
And, no... Few - and probably none - of these people are closeted, self-loathing LGBTQ's. They're evil monsters, whose bigotries have been coddled and nurtured and been allowed to grow. They're part of gun culture. They believe they are at war with anyone who is the "enemy." And to them, the enemy is anyone who is not like them and/or who the QOP says is the enemy.
2022 has been wall-to-wall nonstop "trans people are the enemy!" and "gays are evil!" and "groomers!" So, gee. What a shock that they want to second amendment solution us... just like they did with Gabby Giffords.
There is nothing funny about this. Any of this. It's scary and sickening and infuriating and... I hope I'm wrong but I fear a tragedy happening at a Pride event before the month is over.
We likely dodged one on Saturday.

Starting with checking around the nation looking for parades and gatherings during Pride Month. And looking at the areas where these activities will be held. They likely felt they would have a lot of success with this one as it was in Northern Idaho.
I want them to be able to find out where the funding is coming from, if possible.

CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS

RIOT, ROUT, UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY, PRIZE FIGHTING, DISTURBING PEACE
18-6402. RIOT FELONY MISDEMEANOR PUNISHMENT. (1) A riot is a felony if:
(a) It occurs on or about the state penitentiary, a county or city jail, or any other penal facility in this state, or it involves the taking of one or more hostages. Violation of the provisions of this subsection is punishable by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for not less than five (5) years, no [nor] more than twenty (20) years or a fine not to exceed twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000), or both such fine and imprisonment.
(b) The destruction or damage to public or private property exceeds five hundred dollars ($500). Violation of the provisions of this subsection is punishable by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for not more than five (5) years or a fine not to exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000), or both such fine and imprisonment.
(2) A riot is a misdemeanor in all other circumstances punishable by imprisonment in the city or county jail for not more than one (1) year and a fine not to exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000).
History:
Weapons' aren't mentioned as a contributory element to whether it is a misdemeanor or felony in this case.
That's not to say they wouldn't also be charged with firearm related charges if they broke those alws also, just that it wouldn't have had an impact on the conspiracy to riot charge.
But I wonder why the uhaul? Were they all gonna jump out and do a charge? Why wouldn't they take separate cars? Just curious.
