California animal shelter owner requires people to support gun control — and not be an NRA member — to adopt a pet

A California animal shelter will turn away adoptees who don't stand for gun restrictions.
Kim Sill said The Shelter Hope Pet Shop added, "Where do you stand on gun control?" to their interview process.
"If your beliefs are not in line with ours, we will not adopt a pet to you," Sill said.

A California animal shelter reportedly announced that they will refuse people who oppose gun control to adopt a pet.
Kim Sill, the founder of The Shelter Hope Pet Shop located in Thousand Oaks, California, said that the shelter would require those who are interviewed to adopt a pet to align with its beliefs, The Hill reported.

Sill announced in a newsletter in May that the shelter was adding a question on a person's stance on gun control to the screening process.

-------------------------

Sill mentioned how Thousand Oaks — a city about 40 miles away from Los Angeles —experienced a mass shooting a few years ago in 2018 when a 28-year-old Marine Corps vet killed at least 12 people at the Borderline Bar & Grill. In the newsletter, the founder said the gunman "came to our shop for community service hours" and believed it was a cover to scout the place.

1. So apparently finding homes for the dogs and cats under their care isn't their top priority

Just as a RW group could refuse membership or services, for instance, to anyone who was affiliated with a union, or to anyone without blue eyes, or to anyone who was a registered member of the Democratic party.

What do they hope to accomplish by doing this? Getting a lot of free press? Attract more adopters who are anti NRA, than they will lose? Convince NRA members who are potential adopters to cancel their memberships?

I volunteer for a breed specific rescue group and have three rescues of my own. We are focused on finding good homes for our rescues, irregardless of the political affiliations, or being a member of any group by anyone who is a potential adopter.

... that are incompatible with responsible pet ownership.

The counterexamples you mentioned are not similar.

A better example would be shelters that won't let people adopt pit bulls and other breeds popular with dog fighters and other assorted macho men assholes without home inspections. It's in the contract.

That’s quite a bold stand to take.

They are a boutique type of shelter located in a nice shopping center with primarily cute, small dogs.

I found my wire-hair Jack Russell on pet finder. I was trying to find a playmate with a similar age and energy level for my other shelter rescue who is a Jack Russell chihuahua mix. When I arrived to meet him I was a bit surprised at the location.

5. Do they plan on asking for an in house search...

…before adopting out? Cause how do they plan on proving the person isn’t telling them what they want to hear now that they have given advanced warning of the correct response when asking one’s position on guns?

Basically, everyone agrees on some level of gun control.

It sounds like they have a particular wishlist of additional measures in mind.

If support for additional gun restrictions is what they want from adopters, then they might be surprised that about half of the nation wants things to stay the same or be less strict.

8. Gun fetishes are disgusting.

Remember when people thought smoking anywhere they felt like it was okay, drunk driving wasn't a big deal, and thirteen year old girls married the older guys who got them pregnant?

Yeah, like that.

Personally, I've no use for polls. I'd rather live on the bleeding edges of progress and I've seen a lot of progress in my lifetime, some of it hard won.

The reality of the U.S.A. is that most people don't care enough about guns to bother owning one. The only way to sell more guns in this market is to sell more guns to freaks with gun fetishes.

Eventually people are going to realize that the second amendment is bullshit and it's always been bullshit, just like a lot of other crap our "founding fathers" wrote into the Constitution.

I find that absolutists on either end of the gun control issue are misguided and I don't give them a lot of time.

14. True but in all the cases you mentioned, civil liberties were expanded.

In your case, you're talking about restricting or eliminating a civil liberty described in the 2nd Amendment.

I'm not saying we can't have meaningful gun control (and more of it), surely we can.

Choices? You can’t adopt if your personal beliefs or lifestyles don’t coincide with the owners belief system.

As someone else stated, removing dogs from shelters is obviously not the priority over making a personal statement.

I mean, I've met my kittens. I'm pretty sure there would be a hold up every time the bottom of the food bowl was even remotely visible.

(I kid. The article is grammatically incorrect. "A California animal shelter will turn away adoptees who don't stand for gun restrictions."

The pets are the adoptees. The would be owners are the adopters.)
