I have been lurking about DU for the last 5 years or so, but I have been hesitant to test the waters. However, I will brave it and give it a go.
First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to so many here. You bring me news I would otherwise not know about. And while the world seems to be falling apart at the seams, I find shared grief, sorrow and while a bit rarer, joyous news here has helped me immensely during these alarming times. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
A little about meWhile I came from a VERY dysfunctional household that left me with emotional scars that I struggle with even in my senior years, I was raised in a very progressive, activist household (where they preached what they did not practice). Most of my life has been trying to untangle myself from the traumas that still manage to haunt, but I cherish the progressive values of peace and inclusiveness I learned growing up and try my best to practice these in my time on the blue marble.
Lastly, I hope its o.k. to have an ask and would appreciate any feedback regarding an idea that has been on my mind of late. Like most of you, I have been shaking with rage and feeling rather hopeless about the SUPREME ASSHOLES who are about to destroy any progress so many have struggled for in the last 50 years. So here goes it:
Since religions are allowed practices based on The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993, what if there was a religion based on the sacredness of privacyprivacy of what you do with your privates, who you share them with, and care for them with your doctor. (I believe these are sacred rights that we all deserve.) If religions have rights/exemptions, why not create our own?!? If we formalized our beliefs (The Church of Sacred Privacy perhaps?!?) could it in any way protect rights we cherish, or do I just have wishful (desperate!) thinking?!?!?!!!
I think I will stop here, before I sound any more desperate or ignorant about law and more, but it makes more sense to me than anything Alitos 98 pages of misogynistic bull.
Anyway, thank you all again.

(9,781 posts)I am a relative newbie here and haven't stepped on too many toes. YET
Try to ignore the emotional outbursts. Just skip over them if you are sensitive, as I am.
I try to concentrate on the informative and to provide positive and helpful info.

I use DU as a news aggregator, perhaps the best, and I use HackerNews ( news.ycombinator.com) as an aggregator of tech news, including some great posts on privacy, which I share here. One example:

Digital Security and Privacy Tips for Those Involved in Abortion Access
I should consolidate these. Action item for me.
More to your point, the Satanic Temple has won a few victories, nothing more significant, IMO, than placing their symbol alongside the customary, in a few places.
I *do* feel, from what I've read, that if Judaism, in large part (correct me if I read this wrong) believes that life begins at first breath, then this matter IS a freedom of religion issue, one religion imposing its doctrine on others. No new religion needed!
But how do you resolve it.
Take it to the Extreme Court?
Good luck!
BTW, privacy is an extremely tough issue. When you communicate with someone else, your message is usually saved on their device, and can be retrieved by many methods, including a demand to show the message under threat (for example in a plea bargain) encrypted or not. "Just show me the message that XYZ sent" and this is being played out in real time.
EFF has lots of info.
