"Ashli Babbit had been preparing for this day, the day when world events would turn her way. When a discouraged friend on Twitter asked last week, 'When do we start winning?' Ms. Babbitt had an answer: 'Jan 6, 2021.' " -- New York Times; January 7, 2021

I did not know Ashli Babbit, or even that she existed, until after her death at the January 6 insurrection. Now I know that she had served in the US Air Force for 14 years, before "struggling to keep a pool supply company afloat." (Ibid) I know that she religiously believed in the gospel of Q-Anon, and believed that Donald Trump was both honest and cared about her.
While sacrificing one's life in a just war is noble, I am curious how her family and friends feel after watching today's Committee presentation. Are they, like some of those charged and convicted for their participation on that awful day, aware that Trump lied -- purposely lied to them -- and betrayed them? That he was fully aware that he lost to President Biden?
Are they even dimly aware that Trump had two goals: to steal the election, and to raise money ? And that he would gladly sacrifice their lives, or their freedom, as quickly as he would allow police officers to be assaulted and killed?
Perhaps they recognized that she died for a lie. Or maybe not. For far too few people make the effort to look inside, evaluate, and live, with the same spirit as that person who sacrifices him/herself in a just war. And that is sad, indeed, for one need not "die" in that effort, but just stop inhabiting the lower levels of human potential.

But I wonder if her family & friends recognize that she died both from her own foolishness -- the stupid claim she made of being "woke" without a clue what that means -- and Trump's lies.

(58,785 posts)being evacuated and rushed to lead the mob through the breach they finally opened up -- even with officers poised to shoot whoever tried.
She wasn't insane. She was a "normal" adult, and unfortunately not a rare type. Like her fellows, she chose to believe years of vicious RW extremist lies before tRump came along.
This isn't opinion. This kind of "normal" and how they turn dangerous has been studied many times since the Nazi era, but never more than today.
She and others like her needed a strongman leader to be loyal to and chose to elevate tRump when he offered himself and his unending series of lies crafted to please them. They made tRump what he is now, just as he formed them into his dangerous authoritarian followers. The rough beast that slouched toward Bethlehem.

(73,535 posts)As I noted above, she was stupid enough to refer to herself as "woke." No, she was one of thousands of unconscious machines attacking democracy that day.

(11,730 posts)Conservatives are angry but at the wrong causes. They are angry at immigrants. They are angry at women. They are angry at people of color. All of whom are relatively powerless within the legal and economic systems set up in this country.
She complained about "homelessness" which is definitely a societal problem, but she is going after the "government" and by government she likely means liberals and progressives, not conservatives. She complained about the "drug" problems and again, made vague statements about who is responsible.
The question is, "Who has the power to influence decisions on policy dealing with homelessness or drug manufacturing and distribution?" Is it immigrants, women, and people of color?" OR is it wealthy and powerful people and corporations? Who is more likely to get their desired policies in place?
Similarly, she doesn't know how government works. How the House can pass hundreds of pieces of legislation aimed at reducing poverty and homelessness, but in the Senate, ONE person can block and derail that legislation.
Conservatives are mad at the wrong people because they listen to garbage.

(58,785 posts)And for our own sakes, let's keep in mind that we're talking about those conservatives who do. If all conservatives were that way, we'd never have advanced much beyond the wheel. Instead, more sensible, more reliably decent people, including conservatives, outnumber them and most of the time drag them along.
(Btw, "they" include a smaller proportion of LWers also prone to extremist attitudes. In particular, LW authoritarians, neglected and previously lumped in with RW since they're extremely similar in some ways -- "Lock her up!", are finally recognized for themselves and being studied and quantified.)

My OP is about her family and friends, and if it has dawned on them that she died because she was stupid.
