time.....
Yes I know.. gas is killing us.. inflation is the worse it has been in 40 years.. We are still dealing with the dregs of a pandemic..
BUT
Donald J Trump is being held accountable for his behaviors for the first time in his over privileged life..supporters are having to face up to the lies they have embraced!. Yes there is 30% or so who have their heads so far up the FOX backside, that they will believe anything Trump tells him.. but we are fencing the crazy in.. Thank you , finally, fencing them in
Also we are on the verge of moving something on guns. I am right there with David Hogg on this one. We look to actually be making inroads..
Maybe there is a wake up finally in a large part of the population that in unaligned or has finally seen the light
The January 6th committee is more than I could have ever dreamed them to be.
So far, so good..

(12,326 posts)There is no accountability without prosecution.
Look at the list of people Congress has referred to the DoJ over the last decade... it's long and mostly un-prosecuted.

And that is a big deal.

(38 posts)(CNN)Former President Donald Trump still manages to dominate the political headlines, nearly a year and half after leaving office. On Thursday, the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol used its first prime-time hearing to make the case that Trump used his power to try and overturn the 2020 election result.
The committee faces political headwinds, however. A majority of Americans (55%) now believe that Trump was either not or only partially responsible for the rioters who overtook the Capitol, according to a recent NBC News poll. That's up from 47% in January 2021.
Trump's improving political position is where we begin today.
January 6 did little damage to Trump over the long term
Analysts like me remarked over and over again during Trump's time in office that he was one of, if not the most unpopular presidents. He left office with the lowest approval rating of any president at the end of his first term (39%) and the highest disapproval rating (58%) thanks in part to a late swoon following the events of January 6, 2021.
Today, Trump's polling position with Americans overall is one of his best, and he remains the front-runner for the 2024 Republican nomination.

(12,286 posts)Do you really believe people have not already made up their minds about trump and January 6th and what happened?
Do you think these hearings will sway pro trump people to suddenly say "you know what, he IS a grifter and crook? I have been wrong about that guy all along!"

(50,901 posts)First, they are creating the record of what happened. And they are doing that really well at bringing all the elements together in a very cohesive way. It is crucial that the truth of this comes out.
Second, and to answer your question, they are not trying to convince anyone but the few republiQans who can be convinced. They know we don't need convincing. They know 30% of the country cannot be convinced.
But there is a small percentage of republiQans who have not seen and heard the things you and I have. This presentation is aimed at convincing them and them only. That is why EVERY witness today was a republiQan. That is why they are presenting this the way they are. This is not aimed at people who can sit and parse a regular hearing. This is presented for people with short attention spans who are skeptical but who also smell something rotten.
I really do think there is a small percentage of people who can be swayed by this presentation in which dozens of their fellow party members are telling them what happened.
Now, where this will go I don't know. But it does make me think he can never get elected again. And that is a big deal.

(12,286 posts)I have my doubts.
But I think America is a cesspool of idiots and racists.
We will have to wait until after the Committee hearings and the polling that inevitably will follow.

(50,901 posts)And we don't need many. Just a small percentage to upend the current tight balance of power.

(5,479 posts)There is going to be intense anger on the Trump side if he has repercussions.
We have to, though. Trump belongs in jail.

(4,533 posts)In the long run we will probably get fusion power plants to work. That will eliminate poverty. The cost of energy will be pennies. Or we will figure out how to drill deep for an affordable price, so the heat of the earth will provide cheap clean energy. That would reduce poverty. I think money worries will go away.
