General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs everyone on DU signed up on Twitter?
I have never taken the time to sign up for Twitter. I never cared for it.
But now, there is so much that I cannot read on DU, because there is a link to Twitter and I am blocked .
I wish I was able to read all the great posts but I do now wish to join.

(32,634 posts)Here's what I do: I right click on the tweet and I open it in an Incognito window. This allows me to see what's posted on Twitter (without their nag screen) and also I can scroll down and see the replies to the original tweet. I'm not allowed to post anything on Twitter, but that's fine.
If you are trying this on a cellphone, I don't know how you right-click. (It may not be possible.) On a computer of course it's a different story. Incognito windows are a feature of the Chrome browser, and perhaps a few newer browsers.
I really don't want to spend a lot of time on Twitter, but some DU posts would be useless if I couldn't get on there.
Another nice thing you can do in Chrome is you're allowed to right-click on the posted image, and open that image in a new tab or a new window. This allows you to see the full image (photo, graphic, article, etc.) separate from the tweet confinement. Many times the full image has a lot more to it than what is shown in the cropped version.

(111,089 posts)As soon as I pull up a Twitter link, a sign-up box covers the page and I cannot get into it or read it??
Ohio Joe
(21,755 posts)To get around it, click on 'sign up', the sign up box will have an 'X' in the upper right hand (or left hand, I forget) corner. Click it and the box closes and you can read some more... It will continue to pop up to annoy you for every few posts you browse though though. They really, really want you to sign up.

(7,233 posts)I've created a couple of lists for myself which let me focus on particular areas of interest. I occasionally vote on Twitter polls or report accounts that have gone beyond the pale. Other than that, I've never tweeted, and my account is locked down as far as it can be, no follows, no followers.
Twitter can be a totally fantastic resource, and if I'm exposed to rubbish on it, it's largely my choice to go there - I mute accounts I don't want to hear from for various reasons, or at least whose tweets I don't want to see unless I deliberately choose to, which often reminds me why I muted them in the first place.
You don't need to have a Twitter account or be signed in to read tweets posted on DU - it's probably down to a setting in your browser or a browser add-on - for instance, I run Ghostery, and in the past I've had to allow Twitter's social media button or whatever in order to see tweets without clicking through.

(47,419 posts)It is still hard to believe that Twitter ever took off. Such a bizarre concept, yet it has been successful. I don't "follow" people and have never engaged in a conversation there like I do here or on Facebook.
question everything
(47,476 posts)Yes, it is annoying that posters instead of copying and pasting a comment send us to twits.
As I have said here many times: there are so many thoughtful, intelligently knowledgeable comments here that I appreciate reading. Twits are just farts with no thoughts behind them.
Worse, many here quote twits from names that I have no idea who they are and, therefore do not bother to read. Dan Rather is the exception.
Worse still, instead of giving the content of that hallowed twit: Bob Jones twits about recent rally, we get: twits of the night, or twit of the morning snack etc. So no, I don't bother opening any.
Now, when I am on my desktop iMac, clicking on a post will open the twit.
But with my iPad I have to click on the twit link to open, and on occasions my screen will freeze with the only options are to register or to login. I have to hit the back arrow and leave it at that.
End of rant.
