General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI absolutely lost it yesterday in the hospital waiting room.
I'm usually very easy going , polite & tactful in my red town in dealing with repugs but not yesterday, I
went full on MAGAstan yelling.
After checking in I went into the waiting room and was surprised MSNBC was on with volume loud enough
you could hear w/o straining. A couple came in and sat to my right and then a single gentleman to my left,
we are all listening to the Select Committee hearing when this 400 lb guy comes in and sits right under the
TV looking right at the 4 of us and starts out with "Why don't Biden investigate all the fires the BLM rioters
started" from there it went to bad mouthing the Committee, it's members, Biden, Pelosi etc, etc, etc.
After about 5 minutes of this foul mouthed motormouth drowning out the TV, I sensed the couple was tired
of listening to him and the single gentleman was definitely tired of his rants like myself.
So I walked over to him and as loud as I could muster "You're really one dumb son of a bitch aren't you?
those fires were investigated and they were started by proud boys & oath keepers but your Fascist FQX
propaganda network will never tell you the truth." Had a couple other sentences rebutting other things
he said, and finished with "Now I'd like to listen to what my fellow reQublicans have to say about Jan 6th"
Turned around and there's a male hospital staffer with a clipboard and he's motioning me to come to him,
Oops, I'm in trouble I thought, when I got to him he says "Are you Mike?" "yes" "follow me please"
Walking down the hallway I asked how he knew it was me and he replied everybody else was too young.
Then we joked about the 400 lb guy. And yes I lied...I have no fellow repugs
When I told my brother about this today he said that would be a good question for repugs who refuse to
watch the Jan 6th hearings "What are you afraid of hearing from these reQublicans who were very
close to tRump?"

There is even a school and museum in Indiana that teaches this stuff to kids. Now granted, it sits out in the country and does remind one of a Children of the Corn movie, but still in all, it is real and they are serious.

(48,938 posts)There were no jokes about the weight that you can discern from the OP. They joked about the guy, not necessarily his weight.
How about asking the OP if he was joking about the weight instead of assuming they were discussing his weight.
If the guy looks like he weighs 400 pounds, he probably does. And yes, 400 pounds is morbidly obese and should get strong medical attention.

(32,641 posts)joke about one patient with another patient. I just assume that anyone (including myself) is fair game for being made fun of based on what I've heard about healthcare workplaces. That said, I can't spend time worrying about what others think or say about me behind my back. As long as they do their job correctly and don't rip me off, it's not my concern.
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)But throughout my life I worked in and out of healthcare facilities due to my position as an advocate of people with disabilities.

(11,238 posts)but if you're under the impression that there isn't a whole LOT of this that goes on 'around the corner' - then you are seriously clueless as to what happens in a hospital (or any other human social) setting. It's called sotto voce - and it's going on in every institution and organization in the world. We also have this thing called an 'eye roll' - and it gets used a certain amount too. Sounds like this amounts to a verbal eye roll - employed out of range of the person in question. So, you go ahead and be "outraged and disappointed", my friend ...

(51,308 posts)this nonsense. My profession put me in medical settings all the time. Ive seen professionals in professional settings behave as they should. On the rare occasion that I heard someone make an distasteful joke about a patient or a client, they were usually shut down. At the very least, their juvenile comment was met with silence.
I guess Im happy to take your insult that Ive always known professionals who behave as such. I sure hope the ones you know arent Democrats because that would be disheartening.
And lol, comparing medical professionals to athletes? Kids talking about parents? Please.
Again, I find it chilling that you find this the norm. Glad I grew up in the world I know. Glad I know the people I know, and knew. Honor and respect are not just words.

It is kind of sad that youve known a different type of health care professional.
There are bad apples in every line of work. Im very glad Ive known good ones.
And no, not everyone acts that way. As if that would even be some sort of valid excuse. Interesting what Ive learned here.
Bernardo de La Paz
(48,938 posts)Yes, docs and nurses are professionals, and as such almost always speak professionally to people outside of the profession.
However, doctor morbid humour is legendary. I am not a doctor or nurse so I don't know from personal experience about conversation inside the profession. Like you, my interactions across the "interface" with health care professionals have been professionally handled.
The OP incident had the OP (random patient) and nurse joking about the foxed (deluded) patient, but undoubtedly NOT about the patient's medical complaint or history or medical condition. I get the sense that there was a ton of material to joke about based on what the patient said in public.

(10,414 posts)the employee wasn't mocking the asshole's appearance, weight or revealing/mocking any medical condition.
The MAGAt was making an obnoxious ass of himself. If more people and businesses would stand up to that behavior, maybe they wouldn't be so quick to do it or think it's acceptable.
And I don't think an employee mocking the the things in my first sentence here is OK. It's just that I didn't jump to the conclusion that such inappropriate behavior was what was going on.

(51,308 posts)So this hospital is so pathetic they have no security guard? You couldnt get away from the 400 pound guy? Even in a wheelchair, pretty sure I could make a quick exit lol.
Who cant get away from a 400 pound person? Making jokes like that about morbid obesity is low. I once knew someone close to that weight, who worked in my office. That guy could not have beat up anyone. That is a huge weight and nothing to joke about.
Im thinking you just made up this weight, more likely the guy was just overweight and to you 400 pounds..

BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)Not allowed to comment on it?
How am I giving comfort and aid to a person nowhere near me?
The hospital staffer was out of line, and that has been reported. I take this crap seriously. I dont have to care for a persons political views to still believe theyre entitled to respect and professionalism in that setting. Thanks for giving the facility name and other details.
A person acting like that in front of me in a healthcare setting, saying they would beat you up,, most people would go to security.
Did you actually say you fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee.? Seriously? Omg.
Bernardo de La Paz
(48,938 posts)We make thousands of jokes about the "273 pound" former guy, and few refer to his weight.
A joke about about a black woman is not necessarily, not obviously, not required to be a joke about blackness.
A joke about "Mayor Giuliani" does not have to refer to his mayorality in any way.
If you think staffers never or rarely joke about patients, then you need to get more in touch.
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)Did we need the weight reference too?
Bernardo de La Paz
(48,938 posts)So your next attack will be against people who dare mention Harley Davidson?
400 pounds is less common and more noteworthy than a Harley Davidson tshirt.
Further, just because "unkempt beard" is a common expression does not mean that the beard can't be "unkept". Here, I'll help you:
un·kept
/ˌənˈkept/
adjective: unkept
1. (of a commitment or undertaking) not honored or fulfilled.
"unkept appointments and broken promises"
2. not tidy or cared for.
"lawns unkept and ponds neglected"
BlackSkimmer

(48,938 posts)Point out the "joke". Not that somebody was joking about a guy who was identified as being very large. Point out the joke, if you can, about his weight, not about the guy, but about his weight. A joke make fun of his his weight, not a joke about the guy who was merely identified as being enormous, but a joke about his enormity.
