Hamburg (CNN) Flying economy for any extended period of time is an experience usually endured rather than enjoyed, but one airplane seat designer reckons his design could revolutionize budget travel.
Alejandro Núñez Vicente's Chaise Longue Airplane Seat concept started small scale last year, as a college project for the then 21-year-old. A nomination in the 2021 Crystal Cabin Awards -- a top prize in the aviation industry -- swiftly followed, and the design became the focus of a flurry of online attention following a CNN Travel article.
Since then, Núñez Vicente's been making waves in the world of aviation. He's paused his master's degree to pursue the project full time. He's in talks with big-name airlines and seat manufacturing companies. He's been granted some hefty investment that's allowed the project to develop.
But while some marvel at Núñez Vicente's innovation, others recoil, concerned about claustrophobia and convinced sitting underneath someone else would be worse, not better, than the current airplane economy set-up.

(15,001 posts)Everyone else would have to get out first, and you'd have to crawl over the seats to get to the aisle.
Forget claustrophobia. I'd have visions of myriad forms of death dancing through my head the entire flight.

(35,197 posts)Next time you're in a public restroom, think about what's 2 feet behind you as you take a crap.
Or separated from by you by a 1.25" door or a rather thin partition. Isolated? Hardly.
Fortunately, that barrier doesn't have to be that thick to stop gas, and airplane air circulation is pretty constrained, ceiling to floor.

(101,728 posts)with their myriad of body functions, we expect throughout life--, but the height puts the traveler's face literally and directly inches from the butt of the person in front. I think the designer has one warped sense of humor.

(54,055 posts)They just made the coach seats smaller and smaller, and gave away less to eat, drink or check in the luggage hold until coach passengers found themselves paying extra for just about everything except the oxygen in the main cabin.
Before they stick me in one of the seats depicted, I'll fly Air France, even if I have to fly New York to Atlanta via Paris.

(4,507 posts)And what about an emergency evacuation after a crash? Also looks like a fine recipe for leg thrombosis.
How the hell would you enter/exit? Looks like you would have to squat down standing on the seat and somehow slide your legs forwards. Exit would be even harder - is there a bar you would have to grasp to pull yourself up? Reserved for contortionists only.
Good grief, the isle seats would be bad enough let alone the centre. Sounds like something Trump would dream up...

(46,016 posts)And how would the person in the middle get up to use the restroom? Would they charge more to sit up top?
I remember several years ago they were going to experiment with benches passengers strapped them selves onto. Never heard anything more about that.

Looks like something a Republican would design (profits before principles).

(2,387 posts)First... everybody gets a Depends.
The plane doesn't have seats... it has tubes that can be stacked in the cabin.
You show up, don your diaper, they start an IV of joy-juice, slide you into the tube, and fork-lift you onto the plane.
When you land, your IV has run out, and your baggage has been unloaded.
A quick shower in the communal locker room, and off you go on your travel adventure.
I mean.... as long as we are just cargo anyway.....

But let's not get carried away with ourselves. You want to stack people like cordwood, you get things like that.
Spent a night on the Battleship Houston.
" target="_blank">Bunks were, um, constrained--not not like in the first link. No, the "mattresses" aren't *nearly* as comfortable as they appear.

(8,885 posts)I had to travel on airplanes almost constantly and I already hated it without having to experience something like this. I havent been on a plane since the day I retired and have no intention of ever going back again.
Good luck to those who may be forced to endure this. Hopefully the institute of spine health will come down hard on this idea.

(32,778 posts)by the extra fares from the added passengers, they won't go with this set up.
I can see them starting with this and what they end up with being even more draconian and hideous as they hack away at the weight.
