Another parent wrote to a school board member, citing Cherokee Countys recent census statistics: Did you know that 77.8% of the population is considered whtie [sic] alone 7.7% are black and 11.1% hispanic? Are we now in a county that is going to cater to a handful of people?
---------long long proPublica article that ends with ----------------
Today, the metal detectors remain installed at the entrance to the building where Cherokee County School Board meetings are held. A staff member is permanently assigned the task of evacuating students in attendance, should the need ever arise. And an increased number of security officers are strategically placed throughout the meeting room and beyond.
Standing in line outside the building before a recent school board meeting, mothers identified themselves to each other as a Marjorie meaning a proponent of the speaking style of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, known for her provocative and unfiltered claims.
A little while later, once the meeting was underway, a man who described himself as a school bus driver and a grandfather stepped to the microphone during the public comment period.

This is not California or New York. This is Cherokee County, Georgia. We can choose what and how our students learn on a local level, said the man.
I was raised in a different era, in the 50s and 60s, where we were equipped to survive and succeed.

(46,080 posts)The United States is not a majoritarian democracy. It is a constitutional republic.

And in a constitutional republic, the civil rights of minority populations are protected against the will of the majority which seeks to limit those rights.
In this case, you have a white majority insisting upon their views being prevalent and to attack and persecute those advocating for views that don't subscribe to the that majority. This is counter to how this country was set up. Sometimes "local" has to step aside for "federal". That's why we've had desegregation of schools throughout the U.S. Jim Crow laws perhaps still on the books, but not enforced.

(40,207 posts)It shows how people always seek verification. The unfounded reaction to The 1619 Project and CRT is an example of how small minded and racist people seek permission to be racist. That is what MAGA has done. People now know it is just fine to say the quiet part out loud.

(101,306 posts)They proudly say they want to be ready to get on Carlson's hatefest. They assumed, because Ms. Lewis is Black, that she'd have a "Critical Race Theory" agenda, when she literally had not heard of it (to her, 'CRT' was "culturally responsive teaching" ). They assumed, because she's Black, she had something she needed to "leave that at the border" (despite her coming from a majority-white, Trump-voting Maryland county).
They had a literal mob banging on the windows of the meeting. Despite never actually having had any indication she would do anything other than a normal job, they continued their witchhunt (sole indication of "guilt": being Black) at another job she took (and she wants jobs in the area because her husband relocated there). Because they actively hate her. For being Black.
Either they just made up multiple "sightings" of her, when she was still in Maryland (and why shouldn't she have been in the county she was moving to, anyway?) or they are the kind of racist that thinks and says "they all look the same".
Cherokee County has a high proportion of pieces of shit, and must be an awful place to exist. These are the kind of people who ransacked the Capitol on Jan 6th. These are the kind of people who lynched Blacks a few decades ago.
