The old idea of throwing a former "Football Hero" into a major political race gets less and less likely to work when that "Hero" can't string five words together to make a sentence. Herschel Walker can't really give a speech. He's just not that articulate. When he speaks, particularly off-the-cuff, word salad falls from his mouth.
Bad choice by the GQP.

(10,425 posts)For commenting that he was too stupid to know that he was being used. Those were my exact words. No racial animus involved. I said the same thing about Tommy Tuberville.

All that matters is the R after the name. GQP voters don't require legislative skills. They require obstruction.

I have to believe that Warnock will pull this out, but it won't be easy.

(34,169 posts)It doesn't matter who the Republican nominee is. It doesn't even matter who the Democratic nominee/incumbent is.
They (Republicans and right learning indies) hate Democrats in power and they will vote for any Republican over any Democrat.
In GA, they make up about half the state.
I live her and we're fighting for Abrams and Warnock.

I can't help but think of the hundreds, if not thousands, of co-conspirators involved in 1/6 and everything that came after it. We all recognize TFG's role and that of his close surrogates in launching and running the big lie, but it seems we're missing the bigger picture that includes:
1. Several states selecting an alternate set of electors - that takes coordination among many in each state and nationally.
2. Coordination among many states to quickly draft and pass legislation reducing our voting rights - that will have a direct impact on midterms this year.
3. Close cooperation between media outlets and those running the big lie.
My hope is that these hearings are the loose thread that unspools the knot. My expectation is much lower.
Trying not to be a downer, but we're at 10 months since insurrectionists stormed the Capitol and we're rapidly running out of time.

(10,039 posts)He is the means to an end. The end being a reliable RW vote on EVERY issue. They don't give two shites about how he speaks as long as he can indicate yeah or nay. They would vote for Clint Eastwood's empty chair if it came out as a Republican.

That's all the choices they seem to be going for now - the flash, the name, the bang on the drum. Remember Lincoln about fooling the people, ' You can fool all the people some of the time, some of the people all the time, but never all the people all the time."
They had success with Ronnie the movie star and it went downhill from there it could be argued

(11,736 posts)The GOP is not relying on persuasive candidates. They are relying on capturing the infrastructure of voting (which they have) and suppressing enough votes, to win by whatever margin.
Walker is name recognition for Georgia Conservatives. He has over 65% of the White vote and less than 7% of the Black vote according to one poll that shows him in a statistical dead heat with the excellent Raphael Warnock.
Walker won't debate, he can avoid speeches, and these "foot in mouth" incidents will not stop GOP from voting for him. It will be about getting out the vote and avoiding all of the roadblocks the GOP will set up for Democratic voters.
It should not be, in the least, a tough race. It will be.
