The civil war in the 1860s was fought between liberals (back then represented by Northerns, who were Republican).and conservatives (back then represented by the south, dominated by the Democratic party).
Abraham Lincoln was a liberal. Abraham Lincoln wanted to end slavery. He wanted to give peace a chance by first offering to stop the spread of slavery.
But he soon realized that conservative racists didn't want peace. They wanted to end America as we knew it.
So the liberal Lincoln said fuck this shit. You're not destroying America. And he and we defended America and won.
Today things have inverted and the liberals are the Democrats and the conservatives are the Republicans.
Liberals in the 1860s simply wanted one thing. Don't f*** with America. And the southerners conservatives fucked with America. And they lost and America survived.
Today it is imminent that conservatives will try to steal the elections in 2024, thus trying to end Democracy.
My message is the following: Do not engage in war against America. This is an easy task for us liberals because we have never fucked with America
But conservatives are different. They do not care about America. They will try to end Democracy and the conservative Supreme Court will be on their side, ruling favorably for bogus fraud lawsuits.
We liberals will not put up with that s***. Even the good members of the military will not put up with that s*** because they know that a conservative victory will mean a victory for our greatest enemy, the racists and Russia.
We liberals will never start a second Civil War. But we will win it off there is one. Again.

While the disparities are not so now, we might well come to regret positioning all those military bases in the heart of the old South--today's red states. Just sayin.

(219 posts)While he himself found slavery morally repugnant, he was no abolitionist. He was willing to let the South continue the practice, if it would keep the Union intact.
He was also a typical racist of his day who didn't think black people should have the rights of white people. Rather than letting them integrate if freed, he was in favor of shipping them off to other countries, never mind if they could speak the local language or if they would have any way to support themselves. Just boot them out.
Not exactly "liberal" beliefs.

What counts as liberal today didn't count as liberal back then

(11,767 posts)Certainly the North defeated the South in the military engagement. Yes, the slaves were freed (though I would quibble about how much and when). Liberals however, did not defeat the reasoning behind slavery, which is White Supremacy and Conservatism. White Supremacy is what fueled the South in their ability and desire to maintain and expand slavery, and contrary to popular belief, people in the North were not keen on fighting and dying for the dignity of Black people.
Conservatism is in my opinion, a useless ideology. It is based on the concepts of hierarchy (ordained by god), that was born of defending Monarchy. While Monarchy is for the most part, a diminished form of government, the attitude that "natural betters", usually wealthy White Men, should be in charge and able to do things with impunity, still remains.
The fact that we still have such a strong conservative movement (still based on racial and religious bigotry). The fact that more than half our states are completely controlled by Conservative Government. The fact that our Federal Government consists of a Liberal party that represents more than 60% of the population and yet the government is split nearly 50/50 in power with the Supreme Court solidly in Conservative hands for the next few decades.
History has shown that when conservatism shifts over to fascism, which is its natural end point, that it ends in disaster for the fascists, so yes eventually we will win, but look at what it did to Germany. Look at what happened in England, France, Spain, etc... as they transitioned from arch conservative or fascist modes of government to more liberal ideals.
