What's more Sandy developed below Jamaica and hit us from South to North mostly on the eastern side of the island - an unbelievably rare event.

There is no silver lining to Sandy that can come close to counteracting the sheer tragedy that it has caused.

I know the procedure for naming hurricanes and all, but I'm still greatly opposed to assigning some kind of gender to hurricanes. This isn't a female hurricane, this wasn't a message to Romney, it wasn't the icing on any cake.
It was nothing but a horrific tragedy that will take years and billions of dollars to recover from.
Oh and did I forget to mention that it hit a bunch of Blue states?

(10,303 posts)Generally speaking though, if a natural disaster strikes before an election, the incumbent always has the upper hand. The challenger should stop campaigning, call the incumbent and offer what services that the challenger can muster. At the very least, shoot a few TV ads at the campaign's own expense encouraging people to support the local NGOs who are on the ground working... and the challenger should put down some of their own money too, if possible. Anything else if not co-ordinated with those on the ground looks just plain crass and stupid.
