Alaska schoolchildren were served floor sealant instead of milk at a child care program

Twelve elementary school children drank floor sealant believing it was milk after it was served to students at a childcare program in Juneau, Alaska, on Tuesday, according to the school district.

Students in a summer care program at Sitʼ Eeti Shaanáx̱-Glacier Valley Elementary School began complaining that the milk they were served as part of the program's breakfast tasted bad and was burning their mouths and throats, Juneau School District said in a statement Wednesday.

The breakfast was served on trays by an outside contractor, NANA Management Services (NMS), at about 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday and the children brought their trays to a cafeteria table to eat, the district statement said.

After the children complained about the burning sensation, school district and NMS staff "immediately followed up by smelling/tasting the milk and looking at the container/label," the statement said. "It was found that the 'milk' served was actually a floor sealant resembling liquid milk. Staff immediately directed students to stop consuming the substance and removed it."

The school district is investigating. So how on earth does a contractor mistake floor sealant for milk?

3. Weird that they weren't serving cartons--were they pouring it into glasses?

Didn't it smell like mineral spirits or chemicals? Didn't they notice it didn't say "Milk" or "Dairy" or "Skim" or Cows" on the container? Did they pull it out of the fridge or get it out of a janitor's closet? This is hard to believe as an accident.

9. Still That Way

I've subbed in several schools that offer breakfast.
Some dairies still use the old paper half pint cartons, but most use a little 8 ounce plastic bottle.
I too think it very odd they were serving the milk poured into glasses.
Seems far less healthy & hygienic to do that.

10. Some Acrylic Sealants...

...are aqueous suspensions, so they don't smell like any solvent.
They have an odor similar to water based latex paint. Not terribly pungent.
I did some work on surfactant systems for these suspensions and have been in those plants. Even at those enormous volumes, nothing smells like a solvent.
Some likely are as you describe, but not all.
