My neighbors son wanting to better himself is getting a new job. Started today and of course his employer immediately cancelled his health insurance and his new employer won't put him in the companies coverage for 3 months. So with all these political shit storms raging Americans still have 3rd world country healthcare??
Poor kid is 30 yrs old. Can't afford Cobra at 1600 a month! And he's married with a kid who now has to risk life and limb for 3 months

(12,286 posts)He can get that insurance and it should be less expensive than COBRA.
Have him complete an online application here:

ACA coverage is not as comprehensive as Medicare for all, but it is significantly better than where we were prior to its passage.

(549 posts)In my lifetime. But it still leaves holes that are too costly for average Americans to afford. Really sucks

(4,845 posts)It's great for small business owners (one less spending to worry about), older people going back to school full time, people that want to start a new business, or people looking for better jobs. Their healthcare wouldn't go away and it's one less expense they have to worry about when they are "jobless".

(9,654 posts)Pretty sure changing jobs is one of the reasons he can sign up w/o it being an official enrollment period
There will still be a month he isnt covered because the best that could happen is aca coverage begins first of august? I would call the number on aca website, maybe i am wrong and he has time to get coverage for july
I totally agree its bs that we have to navigate this ridiculous, expensive confusing system
Woodswalker
(549 posts)For July's coverage from what I understand. He can't afford that and couldn't stay at his last dead end job with an abusive boss

(549 posts)The most basic plan. He's making about 50k just enough for little or no subsidized healthcare under the ACA.

(12,286 posts)I enroll people in insurance in Oklahoma all the time.
Woodswalker
(549 posts)Closer to 90K which gets him nothing in subsidies. Might sound like a lot in other states but we're talking NY

(68,556 posts)He paid just under 600. It was actually cheaper when I was added and we did a family plan...but there are other plans...call the reps and they will help you find the best coverage.

I choose the lower cost, better coverage healthcare that Trump promised.
Bring it on!

(4,392 posts)cash flow situation for a while until things get settled into comfortable routine? - likely; will there be risk/sacrifice until then - also likely? Been there; done that as the wife - it's not fun, but I have compassion for him and his family. I hope you didn't really mean he was a 30-year-old kid - that's adult territory! Maybe, at least, Medicaid, for the kid?

(4,392 posts)expensive than signing up. By the 2nd year of availability, I fired my doctor for lying about accepting the private insurers ACA policy after I got a surprise C-note bill for being out-of-network. TPTB did a good job of wiping us out of employment, home, and health care. It's been fatal financially; one waits perpetually for the other shoe to drop. Few docs in this area took those policies anyway. We went without for more than a couple years until we were eligible for Medicare A/B. We would not have qualified for Medicaid anyway. It's only been a few months that we can finally afford gap policies for G and better matched to our needs D policies - I want no part of Advantage plans! So still awaiting senior quality of life care for coverage for exams/glasses, exams/hearing, and exams/dental care and prescribed medications should we require those; it's not like our lying doctor referred us for renewals of those...It's amazing what a WFPB diet can do!

(68,556 posts)The price wasn't bad either...the coverage was better than what he later got at his job when the three months were over...you have heard of the ACA?
