Yesterday's hearing made it pellucidly clear that had he given in to demands, we wouldn't have democracy today. As it is, it is severely wounded, but it's holding.

I only wish we never would have had to get to this point. If people who were supposed to be CIVIL SERVANTS had done their duty to the country from 2016 on, we would never be here.

I am deathly afraid that voter turnout on our side won't matter because this cancer has metastasized to state houses and they will "legally" use any pretext to not count our votes.

10. Agree 1000%. I'd actually edited to point out that Pence was flawed.

Last night Lawrence O'Donnell was almost coming unglued pointing out that Pence should have acted publicly long before and that keeping quiet enabled the January 6 plot to move forward.

Afraid here also. Our institutions have all along have demonstrated the strength and resilience to withstand, including in people on the right we'd given up expecting it from, but we need it above all in the people.

Side note in that our Next Door, usually with little political spouting off, was chock full this morning of angry political haranguing, virtually all angry RW delusion since this is a deep-red GA county. But, I took it as indication that the hearings are not being ignored and shrugged at. Before, the subject was mostly determinedly moved on from.

I've never seen him that heated. And I agree. Where was Pence all those years? I mean, thank Jeebus he did the right thing here, but he doesn't get credit for allowing us to get to this point. As L O'D said last night, he could have put a stop to this garbage if in December he would have clearly said, "No. I do not have the authority." But he did not do that. He could have been killed by the mob!

I'm on NextDoor too, and we've been admonished time after time not to talk about anything political. I live in a blue city surrounded by red areas. I am on the edge of the city and getting close to the red areas so there has been conflict in the past. I'm encouraged to hear that they are paying attention.

11. If the mob had killed Pence

If they had gotten to him and killed him, like their plan was, Congress would have removed Trump and let Nancy be President for a couple weeks until Joe Biden was sworn in.

None of these plans were legal, none of them would have stopped the swearing in of Joe Biden. Certification of the EVs is mostly ceremonial, Republicans weren't really going to stop that. Trump would have had to use the military to seize the government, and the military wasn't going to go along with that.

We are on the march toward fascism, but January 6th wasn't what put us on the brink. People are ready to vote for fascism, they've destroyed truth to the point where voters think fascism is freedom and freedom is fascism.
