I have lived a long life. My choice of career has taken me around the world and put me many times on the front lines of momentous history. I have seen bravery and depravity, hope and fear, war and peace. I have seen leaders uplift and destroy, unite and divide, calm and incite.

I have lived in a world where I quickly came to learn that almost anything was possible, where I was never surprised by the propensity of events to surprise me. But I never could have imagined the United States would find itself in its current position.

With each significant chapter in the candidacy and presidency of Donald Trump, we have experienced a rising tide of outrage, disgust, and disbelief, as well as a pervasive queasiness — is this really happening? What are we not seeing, behind the scenes? How bad can this get?

The events around the last election, building toward the coup attempt of January 6, were obviously dire and significant as we tried to process them in real time. We knew we had come close to losing something precious, but how close, and how much was really at risk? The unknowns and “what ifs” spiraled in our imaginations.

4. One of the things that I find most appalling about the current GOP

is how they have managed to turn a political party I often disagreed with into one that you simply cannot respect. I think it causes most of us a real grief, we have people we loved, respected cared for who were Republicans. Currently Republican does seem like a polite way to say brownshirt.

11. As a gay person, I always looked at them like this. They hated me for something I didn't choose.

Respect isn't a luxury I feel I have.

or that many of them deserve the respect.

I was always surprised to find Republicans I knew, some with gay children sitting by idly while other members of their party attacked people like their children.

My point would be that this current batch of ..... people can taint the memory of more decent people.

as is a lot of the media coverage.

There is too much focus on Trump. Trump failed. Old news.

A significant portion of the Republican party brought us January 6th, 2021 and enabled Trump. They need to be held to account.

The real 'news' is that the Republican party is working to install Secretaries of State and laws to facilitate what Trump failed to do next time - to steal electoral votes.

"what's next for Donald" instead of "why isn't this criminal in jail?".

9. I can't stand the man. Wish they'd lock him up and throw away the key.

Trump is finished politically.

But the country and democracy are so much more important.

Republicans are lining up a repeated effort for the next time. If they're successful, democracy is over.
That worries me much, much more than what happens to Trump.

12. 👆 Yes. They've used him as much as he's used them.

Even if tfg is no longer around and his part in what they're trying to achieve is over, a sinister and unrelenting portion of the Republican party is still trying to break our government, to seize power from the citizenry for their own ends.

I wonder why "Storm the Winter Palace" is the very first heading in the contents of the coup plan. ??? Was that the inspiration for the whole thing? Where on Earth did that idea come from? How many MAGAts had even heard of that century-old encounter???
