Real Time with Bill Maher guests - Friday, June 17, 2022

Real Time with Bill Maher continues its 20th season Friday, June 17 (10:00-11:00 p.m. live ET/tape-delayed PT), with a replay at 11:30 p.m., exclusively on HBO.

This week features a one-on-one interview with Danny Strong, Emmy Award-winning writer and producer of the films Recount and Game Change, whose latest project is Dopesick, a Hulu limited series about the opioid epidemic, starring Michael Keaton.

This week's in-studio panel discussion will include Krystal Ball, co-host of the podcasts Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar and Krystal, Kyle & Friends; and James Kirchick, columnist for Tablet, writer-at-large for Airmail, and author of the New York Times bestselling book Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington.

I cringed when I saw that she was the guest, but Bill kept her chatter down to a minimum so it got so she looked silly...

And I do not understand that marriage - the very same night that she was on, George Conway was on one of the news shows saying just the opposite...

Kirchick is a mixed bag, as a fellow gay Jew, he gets somethings right, and in other areas he couldn't be more wrong; so it should be interesting to say the least.

I'm not a big fan when he has "showbiz" guests in his initial interview, especially when there's such important news, but the panel could be interesting at least.

anti Hillary/pro Bernie and never looked back. For a while she had an online show through The Hill with Saygar which was constantly knocking Democrats unless they were the Squad/Nina Turner variety. Not sure if The Hill booted her out but it didn't seem to end well.

before they knew the January 6th hearing would happen that week, and I assume most guests are booked too far in advance to know what's going to happen that week.

I would assume that guests would be booked significantly ahead of time, especially since some have to travel. But since I've been posting the guest lineup here, it's been tough for me to find out who they are until the night before - and there have been the occasional last-minute substitutes. But I figure that's HBO, they want to keep viewers in suspense so they'll tune in.

Game Change: Trailer (HBO Films)

This HBO film follows John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, from his selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, to their ultimate defeat in the general election.

the John Edwards situation, especially. Was looking forward to a "Game Change" 2016 version and very disappointed to learn it wouldn't be published because one or both of the authors had sexual harassment accusations.

Tonight's show was better than average, enjoyed Danny Strong. And although I always think I'm going to certainly try out a new series I hear about that sounds interesting, which Dopesick does, my batting average is pretty low so time will tell if I check it out.

I liked both of the other guests, ALWAYS enjoy the New Rule segment, and thought he was spot on about his observations about those who I consider to be the overly 'woke' part of my party.

And Danny Strong was my favorite guest, too. I don't look forward to "showbiz" guests, but he deals with an important issue that is also political in his work!

And I liked the other guests, too - think I remember Krystal Ball from MSNBC back in the day. And his New Rules are almost always winners and this week's was no exception. It's usually worth watching the show just for that!

I've been posting the show in the V&M Forum since 2017 or so since the "bootleg" videos that used to be posted would disappear in a day or two, so I post whatever "official" videos are available and include one of the recorded ones, too - since HBO doesn't include as much as it used to on YouTube. I have yet to watch Overtime, so if you haven't seen it, either, I posted it here:

which many others seem to offer as well, but I gave this one a try and it was really quite good.

Also, I must admit that for many months I've received a charge for Hulu, which I think I signed up for just to watch old episodes of Miami Vice, which never happened (OK, bring it on, I can handle it), so I can watch Dopestick for 'free', so to speak.

Thanks!

And I often find it too short - they must get a awful lot of viewer questions and they rarely get past a couple. One week it was former Senator Doug Jones and Ali Velshi from MSNBC, two really smart guys. They really got into talking about one question and Bill cut them off which was disappointing. Guess he didn't have too much to offer himself, LOL. And "Dopesick" does sound pretty good!

She was asked about CNN now prohibiting using the term "The Big Lie" in reference to TFG. And she went on about "opinion journalism" - and equated Fox "News" and MSNBC as both being guilty of it! What?? Now, if you notice, I post quite a bit from MSNBC since that's what I watch - and I depend on them for breaking news - they're not discussing Hillary's emails. And Chris Jansing, who used to be my local news anchor in Albany, New York, has used the name "the former guy" for TFG, same as we do! And Nicolle Wallace often refers to him as "the disgraced twice impeached former president." I see nothing wrong with that, it's not "opinion," that's what happened! And Krystal Ball is obviously not a right-winger, she supports a lot of Bernie Sanders' progressive issues like universal health care and just tonight attacked Amazon for their treatment of their workers. I really don't get her, either...

I always voted, usually for Democrats, but never paid close attention. My grandmother's significant other, one of my favorite people, was very political, Bill Clinton was his candidate, but I'd nod off when they were watching some political TV show.

What woke me up was 9/11. I had a dentist appointment that day and my dentist had the TV tuned to CNN, so I sat in the dentist's chair while everyone else was running around and freaking out, watching that second plane hitting the WTC over and over. I walked out of there being scared to death, felt like the world was about to end, and decided I'd better start paying better attention.

So I started reading and looking things up - and found DU in early 2003 - I was on DU the night of "shock and awe." So I can credit DU with much of my education too. When I recommend DU to friends, I tell them that DU is the best site for news. DU has the smartest people on the Internets, bar none!
