(5,104 posts)But now? No way.
Musk's actions have damaged the brand. I live in one of the areas where Teslas have been common. I know more than a few individuals who have dumped their cars rather than risk association with Musk.
He's shot himself in the foot with a significant portion of his market-base IMO.

(57,052 posts)who wants to put trump back on twitter is enough for me to say "hell no" to buying a Tesla.

(17,140 posts)Would it be better to buy a Toyota or Honda? Besides, despite Trump's amazingly beautiful goodly health, I have my doubts he's long for this mortal coil. I'm certain he's not going to suddenly start making sense. And I'm not going to have money for a new car in my remaining lifetime, so it's a rhetorical exercise, at best.

(57,052 posts)I'd associate myself with his right wing ass even if trump drops dead today.
I have some principles. No money for known right wing a-holes, organizations, political groups, candidates, etc.
It's not complicated.

(13,705 posts)but it's the only ethically challenged car manufacturer with a dumb ass loud mouth who can't help himself leading the company.
I won't contribute a dollar to him. Not because the company is ethically challenged. Because I can't stand Elon and don't want to put a cent in his pocket.

(6,120 posts)People tend to forget it wasn't Musk who invented the Tesla cars (ask the guys at Lucid who really did it). And it's taken the efforts of thousands of US/California engineers and workers, US government incentives and a donated factory by Toyota to get that company where it is today, and to get the other manufacturers on board with electric cars.
Unfortunately asshat Musk wants to take credit for it all (same with SpaceX), and I think his inability to shut the fuck up will seriously damage both companies in the long run. I'm anxiously awaiting his fall, and for someone else to take over. People didn't think Apple would survive the loss of Steve Jobs, and Tim "Apple" Cook proved them wrong.
So when that happens, I might consider another Tesla.

(3,207 posts)There was a time when Tesla was starting off. I wanted to invest in the company but didn't have available recourses.
After I read about the first discrimination law suit where the works said it was like working in Jim Crow south.
I knew the company was rotten from core.

I want to like Musk, because what he is doing with SpaceX is amazing and what the world needs. But holy crap the past year or so.....

(3,938 posts)of what to do next. Until recently I was 100% planning on buying a new m3 next year but with Musk's tweets and actions lately, I'm not sure I want to give him more of my hard earned money. But after looking at what other EVs are available, a Tesla is probably my only option as it meets 100% of my needs.
Which m3 do you have? I have the dual motor long range. I absolutely love it. Love the instant torque, smooth ride, and I find the seats extremely comfortable. Very happy with the entertainment system as well. Mine has enhanced auto pilot (I skipped the FSD option) but I've only used it once. It was OK but I like to drive my cars, not have a computer drive it. Mine is red with white interior. A real eye catcher! Love the looks of the m3!

(27,851 posts)I thought about it but got a Prius plug in instead.
Were waiting to see how the new all electric vans do. Volkswagen is coming out with one.
As of now I dont want to give Musk the business.

(424 posts)That being said. I live in SoCal, tons of Tesla's. Issue is, there are so many asshole Tesla drivers.
Hard going a week without having an incident. Yesterday turn on to beginning of my street. Tesla parked at an angle with door open rather than parked a curb. Car coming the other way so I had to wait to get around tesla. Owner standing next to tesla gives me a look.
Seen them drive quarter of a mile in bike lane to go around traffic. (Punch worthy offense in SoCal)
Four way stops, often see them rolling through.
Musk may have some software that turns drivers into Assholes.

(10,657 posts)I remember as far back as the 70s here in Arizona we referred to them as "California stops".
A pet peeve of mine is people driving with two wheels in the bike lane. It's very common here and it really pisses me off. I haven't noticed a trend as far as make of car though.

Ten years from now, Teslas may be great.

(11,444 posts)The closest I came was my RAV4 EV, which had a Tesla motor/battery. The motor failed after two years and it took Tesla months to supply the replacement. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
I considered a Model Y when shopping for my most recent EV, but it was way overpriced compared to the competition. I got a very nice VW ID.4 with more features I wanted for about $15K less.
Elon's latest charades have put me off even further. No intention of buying one until he leaves.

(16,301 posts)but I'm retired and barely put 6,000-7,000 miles on my car per year these days. I think it's sort of silly to make all buying decisions based on someone's personal behavior. My son has owned a Tesla for about seven years and he loves it. He has never had one problem with it and he drives an hour each way to work pre-pandemic. He's worked from home for two years and now starting to go back on site a couple days a week. He plugs it into his garage to charge. Compared to the price of gas, he's feeling pretty smug about not having to visit a gas station for seven years.

(13,370 posts)And I want the Rainbow Juicy Fruit skin they put on the concept vehicles. It's an electric VW Bus! What's not to like?
If not that, then lime green and matte grey.
Suggested US MSRP for basic Buzz is ~$40/43 K. Extended range another $5-7K. The US versions are about a meter longer, with three rows.
And it will use Universal Chargers. Of course, we will have to wait 2 years for it, but I think they're tooling up to make the US versions in America.

(2,259 posts)If it phones home, and the homeworld can track my car at all times, hard nope.
If the homeworld can arbitrarily turn features on and off including BS like controlling how many miles I can travel on a charge, hard nope.
If I can only have it repaired by the manufacturer, hard nope.
If its electronics want to believe they can drive better than I can, hard nope.
Not to mention that battery production and disposal is going to be the next toxic nightmare.
Nope, nope, nope.

(9,684 posts)The best car I have ever owned. When the time comes, I will compare all other EVs on the market before making an informed choice as to the the highest quality and affordability for its replacement. Elon Musk's politics may be an element in weighing options, but I will definitely be going electric again. YMMV.
